Sharks 2009 financial report - Good or Bad news?

I wonder what the next broadcast rights deal needs to be to keep the Sharks alive. If it's not a significant increase then the banks would have to foreclose you'd think.

You'd think an extra $3mill from the NRL per club. I'd be very surprised if it is close to that.

I'd hate to say this but if this club is struggling so much, why can't the NRL re-locate them to Brisbane. At least Sharks fans would have a team to follow in the future.

Why would Sharks fans follow a second Brisbane team? If it's not a Cronulla side the fans aren't going to care or move with it. If anything they'd be more likely to hate it as it would remind them of what they lost.

The sharks have handicapped the wages of NRL players for far too long. Raise the cap Mr Gallop and if the sharks can't swim....

if they were to abolish the cap or raise it significantly, there would only be a few teams left in the comp.

I just had a quick look in the Cronulla forum and found 5 threads on the first page that are about St George Illawarra, St George Illawarra fans or St George Illawarra players.

I couldn't find any Cronulla related threads on the first page of the St George Illawarra forum.

Who has the fixation?

Personally I hope you guys can dig yourselves out of the hole. I live in the Shire and many of my friends follow the Sharks - I'd be upset for them if their team folded.

That's not to say the supporters don't give the right royals sh#ts at times.

As an accountant, I have the following thoughts:

its the annual report, message to fans - it needs to be a positive message. The more interesting parts of the report would be the financial statements.

The most interesting item is the 3.8m loan that the leagues club has written off - this is 3.8m of funds given to the football club over and above the 2m grant given each year. I wonder how long this debt accumulated before it was written off?

I would also wonder how much provision for debt the directors felt comfortable to allow before it was seen as something that could corrode long term viability. In other words, how much provision for bad debt can the entity handle.
