Sharks on alert as Pig goes to market
By Steve Mascord, Suncorp Stadium
May 30, 2004

St George Illawarra hooker Mark "Pig" Riddell failed to emulate his matchwinning feats of last season at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, but he stands to gain much more than a winning bonus in coming weeks.

The Dragons announced before kick-off in Brisbane that Riddell had permission to negotiate with other clubs.

Neighbours Cronulla were immediately installed as favourites to secure his signature. The Sharks have also been closely linked to off-contract Dragons Brent Kite and Justin Poore.

"[Manager] Darryl [Mather] and myself will be working through what options are available and hopefully it will be sorted out as soon as possible," said Riddell, who kicked the winning goal in the Dragons' win over Brisbane in round 26 last year.

"I think Darryl's had a meeting with a couple of clubs and he's got them lined up for the next few days or so, and I think a formal letter is going out.

"I'm by no means gone yet, but I'm on the open market.

"I've got to go where's best for me. It's not just going to be a money decision, it's not going to be a loyalty decision, either. I'm just going to weigh things up."

He should start by weighing himself.

Poore would be great for us. Him and Green are two front rowers which could be the cornerstone of our pack for the next 10years. Both are only 18/19.
Poore went to Endeavour High and was on the same Oz Schoolboys tour as Aitken, Galloway, Pelo, Green and Steve Ross. He would know more than his fair share of people at the club.
After Sully's performance last night we probably dont need Riddel if he shows he can play 80mins but i wouldnt object to us going after Riddel as i dont think he is a bad player.

I for one will be very pissed off if Riddell signs for us..

KEEP SULLIVAN!! - he was the difference last night and will be in many games to come.

The rumours of us chasing riddell will only add to sullivan not wanting to stay as well.

Why do we need a fat goal kicker anyway??

I don't think we need fat.
But I'd take the second part, if he was a better kicker.
@71%, he's not the sort of kicker you target.
Although his career stat just makes the cut off @75%

This is an interesting situation. I think Sullivan cant be beaten but Riddell is a great player as well who can kick. All I can think of is mayb Riddell could play somewhere else (I doubt it) or Sullivan could go to 5/8 and Riddell at hooker.

I dont want Riddell
If we're going to spend that sort of money we could get a much better player

And I dont think his goal kicking is all that flash hot either
Matt Head is much better and I dont know why Riddell is the #1 kicker at the Dragons
He's not that crash hot

Sully is so much better than Pig. I don't want Kite... Poore would be ok because he wouldn't cost much. I think if the club wants to sign a hooker go after Ennis from Newcastle.

Riddell would make a handy secondrower not just a hooker.

With the right conditioning he would be a great buy.

Tremendous heart and makes inspirational runs.

I don't think Aitkin is coming on as well as everyone had hoped.

Not that people have written him off but he is still very very young and might need a couple of seasons in Premier League to sort his complete game out.

In which I would be shifting Sullivan to 5/8 next year.

Last night he was the gun organiser.

Brent Kite & Poore would be quality signings as well.

Kite is extremely mobile and has great upper body strength.

Signing all three would mean a certain big name won't be with us next year.

When Riddell plays good , the Stains win. Definate impact player and more than a hand full cose to the try line.

I think the only option for Riddell would be to put him in the second row. Sullivan in interviews has said he likes being hooker and doesnt mind playing as an impact player off the bench either, so he might not enjoy playing at 5/8, maybe the opportunity to play in the starting line up may out weigh this.

hhmm more money well spent by DS. He offers nothing the Sharks haven't already got at least 1 better of , & thats kicker.

The reason he will never play there is because he & Kimmorley miss on average 10 tackles each per match & thats up the middle misses.. Another good move.

Actually , Noddy was the main, but many of his executions were quite average. Peachey was the second point & everything was class.
Sully filled in a hole a couple of times to link, nothing more. But that is taking nothing away from his superb game. Especially around the play the ball.

your either an idiot or baiting people with continuos ridiculous line.
Have you given up on Ando yet or are you still pushing that barrow too?

Ok Reefy you don't rate Riddell but many here do including myself.
He's having a tremendous season and would certainly give us some power in defence and momentum with hisruns.

I personally thought Sullivan was the most dangerous playmaker out there last night. I thought Noddy did far too much catch and pass and didn't take the line on enough. Sullivan did and he score a try from it and set up two others.

As for giving up on Ando.
YES ! I had as soon as Raper was announced as coach. I got on with it Reefy and so should you.
