Sharks on alert as Pig goes to market
By Steve Mascord, Suncorp Stadium
May 30, 2004
St George Illawarra hooker Mark "Pig" Riddell failed to emulate his matchwinning feats of last season at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, but he stands to gain much more than a winning bonus in coming weeks.
The Dragons announced before kick-off in Brisbane that Riddell had permission to negotiate with other clubs.
Neighbours Cronulla were immediately installed as favourites to secure his signature. The Sharks have also been closely linked to off-contract Dragons Brent Kite and Justin Poore.
"[Manager] Darryl [Mather] and myself will be working through what options are available and hopefully it will be sorted out as soon as possible," said Riddell, who kicked the winning goal in the Dragons' win over Brisbane in round 26 last year.
"I think Darryl's had a meeting with a couple of clubs and he's got them lined up for the next few days or so, and I think a formal letter is going out.
"I'm by no means gone yet, but I'm on the open market.
"I've got to go where's best for me. It's not just going to be a money decision, it's not going to be a loyalty decision, either. I'm just going to weigh things up."
