Sharks join Turner race

By Rebecca Wilson and

EXCLUSIVE THE Steve Turner saga has taken a dramatic twist, with the Cronulla Sharks now firmly in the mix to make a last-minute grab for the winger.
We can reveal that Gold Coast Titans insiders have confirmed they offered Turner to the Sharks as a replacement for Darren Albert - and that Turner sees the Sharks option as a strong possibility.
NRL boss David Gallop confirmed on Friday the Sharks would like to sign Turner, and that he would not stand in his way.
"If he is happy about it and the Titans are happy, then we would approve the move,'' Gallop said.
Titans boss Michael Searle says he contacted Sharks chief executive Greg Pierce late last week.
"I knew they were struggling to find a suitable replacement for Darren Albert so close to the season kick-off,'' Searle said.
"If we can reach a commercial settlement with the Sharks, we would be happy to see Turner go to that club. We are very, very keen to see an end to this impasse.''
Melbourne remain determined to hold on to Turner, even though he gave the Gold Coast a verbal and written commitment that he would move to the Titans for the start of the season.
Storm boss Brian Waldron is refusing to budge on Turner and has offered two Storm juniors to the Gold Coast as a trade.
Waldron refuses to acknowledge that he is liable to pay the Titans compensation for Turner. Even former Storm boss John Ribot has made several deputations to the NRL on the Storm's behalf.
Sharks coach Ricky Stuart confirmed the Gold Coast had made an approach. "We are very interested if Steve is, because he would fill the gap left by Darren Albert,'' Stuart said.
Turner's manager David Riolo said the Sharks were an option.
"But none of this takes away from the fact that from day one Steve Turner has wanted to remain in Melbourne, and that is the heart of the matter. The Shire is a fair way from Olympic Park.''

I thought the whole reason Turner re-signed with the Storm was because he and his girlfriend didn't want to leave Melbourne as they were all settled there - way to dig yourself into an even deeper hole, Steve.

Wait, I thought it was the Titans who came up with this idea, and Waldron shot it down :?

So wait, how is this an option at all? This just proves it's not a case of Turner wanting to stay in Melbourne...it's a case of Turner not wanting to play for the Gold Coast, and will play anywhere else. Gallop should not have approved this idea, IMO. He should deliver an ultimatum to Turner: Either turn out for the Gold Coast, or get a job as a brickie for the next 3 years.

Has to be an editorial error.
Another hastily published article from Becky and the Telegraph.

Is David Riolo the reall villain in all this fiasco? Most players just sign on the dotted line because they trust their managers so Riolo is probably the bloke everyone should be aiming for.

Hard to say. I think the butler did it.

David Gallop would make a good butler. Why is he allowing this thing to carry on? He should give Turner and his manager an ultimatum asap.

Does he have that in his power?
I suppose he could threaten them with deregistration from the NRL under the 'dragging the NRL through the mud' clause, but that's a bit of an overeaction.

He is the ceo. He makes the rules so I reckon he has the power. I think he would look stong for a change if he just came out and ended this debacle.

I do think in the begining it was a matter of wanting to stay at Melbourne, but given how they have started to jerk him around, and the fact he has been jerking the Titans around for so long, I can understand why he has shifted position.

I think he is definitely to blame for the whole incident, but that aside he is a great player who I would be stoked to have in our backline.

Possibly, but most with half a clue know he has the backbone of a snail, but thats about as close to 'strong' he'll ever come, if at all....'looking' strong.

Searle is looking better with this new development imo, time to see just how staunch Wally Waldron really is.

Well I agree that he has been a bit inconsistent during his tenure, but he did deduct Canterbury 37 points once... considered by many to be a strong decision at the time. But even then I'm sure he had to consider all angles.

Maybe he still thinks there is room for the participants to sort it out like grown-ups.

For every day Steve Turner is not a member of the Titans the Bulldogs should lose 20 points.

Turner is turning into more of a "you know what" than the infamous Divine Brown (sunset blvd...Hugh Grant.. 1995)

this whole thing has just taken a turn for the ridiculous

I'd say its taken a positive turn, hardly ridiculous....its probably the only positive angle since the whole debacle began.
