Is it just me, or has Cronulla perfected the art of public grovelling for talent?

Wite Lote and Rogers, Cronulla seemed to like to 'talk up' the chances of these players appearing in Sharks colours. But it didn't appear they had much luck, they just seemed to engage in a bit of public arse-kissing. Now they are talking up the chances of Turner showing up to play. Don't these blokes execute a deal BEFORE they run to the media for their five minutes?

I know every club does it, but Cronulla appear to (beautifully) combine a lack of media savvy with a pathetic club culture to produce such wonderfully inspiring lines that usually consist of 'Yeah, we'd LOVE it if (High-profile player) actually talked to us about a deal'.

it depends how you look at it, it may be public grovelling but at the end of the day the day their sponsors would rather their name be mentioned in positive light, especially if it's only linking them to Turner, Lote and the like while other clubs like Parramatta tend to do things on the quiet when they're negotiating with players or if they're interested in certain players.

As long as it gives Cronulla fans, sponsors and members boners, than they're happy.

David Gallop would make a good butler. Why is he allowing this thing to carry on? He should give Turner and his manager an ultimatum asap.

Gallop is nothing but a hypocrite...Turner to the Sharks is endorsed by this fool and shows that he is actively supporting a club being allowed to player swap without any reference to Storm or the fact that Storm are one of the parties involved in this dispute ??.

Your right about Parra - you never hear them talking up a possible recruit.

It's perfectly reasonable for Cronulla to go to the media about every possible player purchase - but jeez fellas - if you want a little credibility, you'd probably want one of those possible recruits to ink a deal.

yeah as Parra supporters we get a little frustrated over it but their policy is generally to keep their trap shut in regards to who we're talking to, i actually found out late last year that we were well in the running for Asotasi and matched Souths offer only fall short with the length of the contract.

Thanks for the informative response...

well you do realise what you said?

if the Titans were happy for the Storm to sign him Gallop would have no problems.

He is not being hypocritical at all

as i said, you have no idea.

Nope - its just you.

Where have they "talked up" their chances of Lote?

Hardly with Rogers - GP entertained the idea when questioned saying "it was Rickys call". To which Ricky Stuart expressed he was not interested.

You have your direction of correspondence mixed up fella.

So they comment in a positive manner on a player - and thats talking it up?

So by your theory - they "talked it down" BEFORE hand with regard to Rogers?

Here we go again...

You still fail to understand that the Storm contract has been deemed to be invalid. They signed a player who was contracted elsewhere. It seems that this fact is getting ignored by a number of Storm supporters. The circumstances haven't changed just because you've found a new Turner thread.

The report in this thread quotes Gallop as saying: "If he is happy about it and the Titans are happy, then we would approve the move,'' Gallop said.
In other words, as far as the NRL are concerned, Turner can play anywhere else he likes, as long the Titans agree to release him. And the Titans are interested if the agreement is worth their while. Work it out.

Ask Waldron. It was he who has decided to wash his hands of the matter when he said:

If you don't want your club to be linked to a player don't discuss said player publicly - every club knows that.

A club talking about any potential recruit in a positive manner can clearly be classified as 'talking it up' - every media story about any RL free agent is based upon this presumption.

Combining my original viewpoint with your deluded take of the Rogers situation is not my theory - but by all means, take another crack at it...

Deluded viewpoint? I think you are the one deluded mate. Greg Pierce came out and said he would talk to Rogers if Sticky was interested. The next day Sticky came out and said, no we are not interested.

That's really talking up a player

Regarding Lote, how is it any different to the Broncs talking him up?

Wasn't too long ago Sione was linked with the Broncs either...

Go ahead mate, maybe take another crack at it.

Pierce didn't have to say anything if he didn't want to be linked to Rogers - but he did, and such stories lasted for a day.

Um... Lote is a former Bronco, and as with Rogers, the media will come looking for a story - If your club don't want to be linked to these players, don't have your CEO come out and talk about them...

Where was Bruno or Wayne talking about Sione - there's a difference between a paper creating a link between a club and player without any substantive evidence, and a paper creating a link between a club and player through quotes from the club's hierarchy. Get it?

But only the Sharks are viewed as poor if they do so.

Absolute crap.

Thats right - its your view point opposing mine that makes it deluded, i see.

You said Sharks talked it up.

They were asked about the Rogers possibilty - to which it was put too rest.

Its not the clubs fault for how the media wish to print an article - afterall it would be boring reading if they printed it exactly how they receive it.

Cronulla chief executive Greg Pierce said...."...we wouldn't have met him if we weren't genuinely interested"

Ok Fruitcake, so having the club chief executive publicly state that he is 'genuinely interested' in recruiting Lote Tuqiri isn't 'talking up' the chances of recruiting Lote Tuqiri? Good one...

Pierce said much more then that - we both know that.

Pierce dangled the recruitment carrot for the media, then a day later it was put to rest - this differs to putting the issue to rest at the first opportunity.

Well, to be fair, your club chief executive does have a lot of say in the way such articles are published - they all tend to revolve around HIS QUOTES, if he doesn't want an article to imply anything, he shouldn't imply anything.
