Peachey v Hodgson EVEN
Merrit v Moodie TIGERS
Bailey v Wilson SHARKS
McGoldrick v Elford EVEN
Reick v Miles TIGERS
Bird v Fitzhenry TIGERS
Kimmorley v Prince SHARKS
Stevens v Patterson SHARKS
Bosnich v Senter TIGERS
Nutley v Skandalis EVEN
Lomu v Graham SHARKS
Gallen v O'Neill TIGERS
Hilder v Sattler TIGERS

Beattie v Reynolds SHARKS
Galloway v Halatau SHARKS
Isemonger v Heighington SHARKS
Sullivan v Gibbs SHARKS

I see this being a very tight game. Man on man I beleive that the Tigers have the better run on side. On the bench I see Cronulla having the advantage over the Tigers. There are many variables that will make this game a fascinating contest. The Tigers have no less than 6 new players in their starting 17. Will they gel straight away and produce the form that their supporters know they are capable of?? Cronulla have a more settled squad, but what about goalkicking?? Who will be the kicker and will it cost us the game?? Will Cronulla adapt to the deeper attack??

I beleive that it will be a very physical game of football, no doubt about that. I also feel that the Tigers are good for at least 4 converted tries. I beleive that the strength of Cronulla's bench will be the deciding factor in what should be a very good game of football.

I tip Cronulla to win by 2 points. 26-24. I think the scoreline will read 6 tries to 4 with the Tigers converting all of their tries while Cronulla will only kick 1 from 6

Interesting analysis. Man on man analysis is fairly pointless though. Kimmorley is worth 2 of anything in their side but he only counts for one vote. :)

I'm a Broncos supporter - unbiased view incoming with all players at their best, my assessments would be

Peachey v Hodgson SHARKS
Merrit v Moodie SHARKS
Bailey v Wilson EVEN
McGoldrick v Elford TIGERS
Reick v Miles SHARKS
Bird v Fitzhenry TIGERS
Kimmorley v Prince SHARKS
Stevens v Patterson SHARKS
Bosnich v Senter TIGERS
Nutley v Skandalis EVEN
Lomu v Graham EVEN
Gallen v O'Neill TIGERS
Hilder v Sattler SHARKS

Beattie v Reynolds SHARKS
Galloway v Halatau TIGERS
Isemonger v Heighington SHARKS
Sullivan v Gibbs SHARKS

I'll admit to knowing little about Heighington and Gibbs

Very close game and hard as hell to tip - Marshall on the bench would help the Tigers enormously imho

a couple of my selections need clarification - Bailey is probly better than Wilson, but as centres, both do a similar type of role and therefore I see them as even

Hilder better than Sattler is a big call, but I rate Hilder as a star of the future - its mighty close though

In judging the packs including bench forwards I think the Sharks have a slight edge, throw in the direction of Kimmorly and the Sharks win in a close one

The Tigers have a slight edge in goal-kicking - I don't see the outside backs having a big bearing on this one - hunger could be the key although first game of the season you would think both would be 100 mile an hour

cheers

Don't want to be rude, but how the hell can you call Nutley and Skandalis even?

The rest aren't so bad, but that's a standout to me. Nutley on field is worth 2x what Skandalis is...

its only an opinion .... some would call me nuts rating Hilder above Sattler ..... what you gain on the swings you lose on the merry-go-round

good post fizman

if the sharks cant beat this - one of the weakest sides in the NRL - with an almost full strength squad we are in for a long season

sharks should win in a tight one

my main point of interest is how raper will react to nutleys lack of self control

tip of the week:

nutley to only give away 1 penalty all game

Cronulla to kick 1 from 6  at least 4 from 6

Great post, Fizman, but I disagree with quite a few of your calls with McGoldrick, Nutley and Gallen as three of the stand-outs.

I reckon the Sharkies should do this mob by 12+.

and with that in mind

John Wilson in 2003 scored 16 tries in 20 games for a club that finished lower on the ladder than the Sharks

Phil Bailey in 2003 scored 12 tries in 21 games

tries don't tell the whole story - granted - just a couple of stats to back up my statement

Bailey is "probably" a better player than John Wilson - but as centres - its very marginal if at all

I'm a realist .... I rate them somewhere between about 6th and 10th .... would need monster seasons from our big guns and Seymour to get to SOO standard in about 6 weeks to be any hope .... and I don't feel thats possible

In saying that .... I reckon there are 7 genuine premiership hopes and 13 genuine top 8 hopes

Interesting assessment of the players based on past perfomances. However, this year is a new season, it's a clean slate. Cronulla has a lot of new players who could really develop reputations, mixed with experience. The Tigers have a lot of older more experienced players who were not required by other clubs.

If the forward packs were evenly matched I couldnt see Wests getting beaten however our already dismal pack has been weakened with the loss of two front rowers. We now have skando, a 19 y.o and a useless f**ker no-ones ever heard of to carry the team. Add to this the loss of Richards etc we are pretty badly weakened. Sheens also saw fit to name a few backs on the bench. Fitzhenry should be in the centers with Reynods at 5/8. Having an attacking player like reynolds on the wont go astray though.

yea, you blokes have been farged up with injuries, westie. its weird how they always seem to come in bunches

should still be a pretty even game though. there's plenty of pride on the line in this one.
