So how was Shaun’s show ? I didn’t catch it

Tbh these days, I don’t really watch any pre match buildup or post match analysis, it started off with the sky buildups, especially Honey who I find unbearable (PW, I can’t say a bad word about Laura having spent some time with her) and that went across to the Oz stuff when the likes of Corey Parker were on there a lot. Would watch more of it if we could get the 9 coverage probably. Most of my content is around podcasts these days

Here's the Youtube link to episode 1:
I enjoyed Tohu and Roger. SJ was okay. Bit overhyped but i guess it was his first show.

9 coverage is awful TBH, I stick to Fox even for the FTA games

SJ seems to be getting some cut-through in the media space. He speaks well and seems to offer good perspective. Has his own midweek show starting. I'm liking what he's doing.
It's just as well he's going good because if he wasn't, well, we know he probably wouldn't take onboard any constructive criticism.

I could see him storming off a set, youse got what you wanted!

Yeah I'm sure she's great company especially on the town, and Gup is a champion bloke, but gee she's unbearable on the coverage, too. I actually don't like the rah rah cheer for 'our team' Warriors stuff on SKY. I actually want my coverage to pretend like it's neutral. OK sure you're catering more so to Warriors fans, but not exclusively.

But yeah most pre match buildup and post match analysis - if it's not insightful - is absolute guff. It means literally zero. Gus Gould said a few weeks that the Tigers were really going to trouble the Storm and could even tip them up, and they lost 64-0. Jeremy Latimore on the Journeymen gave the bold prediction that the Drags were going to make the top 4 (I know, bias and all that) and they lost 50-6 to the Phins 2 days later. And it's not like you ever get pulled up on those rubbish calls.

I like podcasts who talk about selection, old stories, how they would pick a side etc but as for previewing who will win and how, what they need to do (score more points, mainly) yeah I'm not interested.

Think some of the problem with Sky, is they are stretching their staff across many sports. Laura is great on the cricket, have never known them as a big league family though. I’ve heard Glenn Larmer call multiple sports this year, and none of them well
Bring Back McIvor and Peter Wopati !!

That journeyman podcast is one of the most bizarre ones I listen too lol, the stuff they come out with is all over the show. Gallen on there this week giving his thoughts on SBW

SJ the retired full-time pundit has definitely come out of the gate strongly with his focus on genuine analysis, but I do honestly think that sort of winking-at-the-camera "jeez it's just so great to be here talking about footy" shtick will grate eventually.

Totally with you on this - I like Shaun but some of that comes down to him being a fresh change of scene from all the familiar Fox faces we've had for too long. He's just on the cusp of needing to make that transition - from the free pass of being the bouncy new kid to dialling down the milk and making it about the game.

I'm stoked we have an NZ focused footy show, Matty Johns pilots his really well and SJ will do well to bring something similar. SJ blows away the local competition, Monty only got by on the power of his guests and it's still odd to me he's got a media gig despite constantly sounding one dimensional & forced.

Yet he's probably the best regular on SKY now, although Richie Barnett is OK. When you compare Monty to Honey, Glenn Llama, Laura and Willie Poching, he's Ray Warren.

I'm always nostalgic for Allen Mac and Owen Wright on NZ radio. It was circa-2006-2011 and the mrs and I had moved up here to the Blue Mountains. Saturday night, winter, and ABC Radio would take the NZ feed for Warriors games and I loved drinking beer and cooking dinner with the game.

Bless both those men, and the pretty good Warriors side at the time.

Used to be compulsory listening at 10am every Monday morning when Brendan Telfer and Allan Mac would go head to head on the Rugby League hour on radio sport

Speaking of sky, how the hell are they still sending Chook Halligan around all the grounds in Oz when the Warriors play, good bloke but 20 years and zero improvement with a microphone for the stray dog

It's almost literally impossible to lose your job at SKY, no matter how hopeless you are. Think about the battlers we've had over the years, who were commentary's humanised versions of fingers down a chalkboard: Peter Ropati, Stephen McIvor, Honey Hireme-Smiler, the guy whose name escapes me who used to overpronounce the shit out of names (Feleti Martel-o), Glen Larmer, the Stray Dog, and so on. I give the likes of Costo a free pass because at least they tried to do their research and know the game.

That 10am shift, I used to always listen to that. Holy hell, those two grumpy old men used to go for it. Brendan Telfer was a great broadcaster. As for Allen Mac, he was Jekyll and Hyde. A wonderful radio presence, with unmatched passion, yet the world's most boring cricket coach. I still shudder at hours of 'drop and drives' from A Mac.
