First step. Now let’s see RFL get the cheque book out and get Andy Farrell or Shaun Edwards as coach. Sam Burgess and Adrian Morley as assistants.

Two blokes who haven’t been involved in rugby league for 20 and 26 years? Why on earth would that be a good idea? And Sam Burgess?! He’s got 6 games to save his job before he gets the boot at Warrington. What a disaster of a series of appointments that would be.

When you have the interim CEO, Abi Akoku saying that lack of preparation wasn't a problem for the England in the Ashe's series, when it clearly was shows just how far off the pace he is with the modern game. Nobody is saying it would have altered the series results, but it would have made England more competitive.
The jobs a poison chalice at the moment not helped at all by Nigel Wood and Abi Akoku at the RFL office.

Agree, unfortunately whoever next takes up the mantle is being setup to fail by the fact the RFL has zero mid-season internationals, warm up games or training camps scheduled.

How do you build combinations or implement a new playing style without having the squad together? It's not possible, which then forces the national team to either go with established combinations to try and overcome this or sees the team play conservative football.

England are an after thought for the RFL and the clubs here (and perhaps the IRL, too), so I’m not really sure why anyone would want the job. I think it’s more likely to harm someone’s reputation than it is going to boost it. What’s the aim for the World Cup? Progress out of the group? Even then, with Tonga and PNG as fixtures, it’s not exactly a given that there are two wins from those two games. One win isn’t going to be enough with Samoa and Tonga in the group.

As for who will get it, I really don’t know. Looking at who is coaching in Super League you have:

Kurt Haggerty - in his first head coach role at Bradford.

Ryan Carr - just arrived at Cas.

Joel Tomkins - has coached about 15 games in his career.

Luke Robinson - admittedly at a struggling side but hasn’t exactly shown anything that makes you think he’s a good coach.

John Cartwright - has a mammoth job on his hands turning a tepid and soft Hull team around and I’m not sure he/they would welcome a duel role.

Willie Peters - his stock is sky high, he’ll be being monitored by NRL clubs for 2027 and beyond, I imagine, and he’s just worked with Australia. Would he want the job?

Adrian Lam - I don’t think he would be a bad appointment. He’s coached internationally before and Leigh play some good rugby. Would he want it though?

Brad Arthur - doesn’t want to be here, wants to be back in the NRL and an ailing England side isn’t going to raise his stock in the eyes of the NRL clubs.

Paul Rowley - just taken the Saints job, which is seen as a long-term project.

Sylvain Houles - French, not exactly the top of anyone’s list.

Daryl Powell - seen a few people raise his name. He’s turned around a poor Wakefield side but has personal issues (an ill grandchild), so would he want the little free time he has taken up by the England job?

Sam Burgess - he’s under massive pressure this year at Warrington. One win in the final 9 in 2025 and 4 wins from 14 post-Challenge Cup Final (one of those against Salford), I’m honestly not sure what credentials he possesses that makes him a candidate for the role other than his birthplace. I think Burgess needs to concentrate on staying in a job with 5 of 2025’s play-off making sides in the opening 8 games.

Matty Peet - probably the easiest candidate to choose. Won it all at Wigan, English and coached many of the England players at Wigan in various roles. Would he want it though?

Mark Applegarth - just ‘promoted’ with York, did well with them in the Championship but his spell at Wakefield was a disaster, not all through his doing.

Because they are proven leaders, league legends and know how to get a team of elite players to function together and give their best. Players don’t need skills coaching at that level, they need to be the right players picked, play to a well designed game plan and gel as a team quickly.

Wasn’t the main problem. Wrong players picked, poor game plan and poor execution was. Kangaroos had the same prep together as England did, arguably England got together more during season than the kangaroos did.

Buzz word bullshit, I’m afraid, a trait of Shaun Wane right there Neither have any relevant experience in the sport in a generation. Blowing your beans on rugby union salaries for people with no relevant experience to do a part-time job is tantamount to The RFL holding a live stream of them burning cash.

Problem with English Sport is there is not many if any English people in the top roles even in domestic comps

England Football Manager is a German (Thomas Tuchel)
England Cricket Coach is a New Zealander (Brendan McCullum) as is the captain (Ben Stokes and two of the bowling coaches in Tim Southee (Fast Bowling Consultant) Jeetan Patel (Spin Bowling) - The other fast bowling coach is David Saker (Australian)

Now England's Rugby League Coach is likely to be an Australian.

They don't seem to be very good at preparing their players post playing career into being coaches.

Would he want it? He’s probably the best candidate in the UK right now and could do a PT role alongside his job at KR but after being with Australia, would you want to work with England? If the option is being retained as an assistant for Australia for the WC or being the Head Coach for England, I know what I would pick.

Seems like Andy Farrell is fully a Union man these days and hasn't looked back at RL since he left.
