Tim Sheens appointed Wests Tigers new head of football to seal stunning return to Concord

Tim Sheens is coming back to Concord with the Tigers confirming the coaching great as the club's new football performance boss with immediate effect.

One of the game's sharpest football minds, Sheens will act as advisor for Tigers players and coaches in a role that focuses on pathway development and planning, recruitment, football administration and club culture.

Sheens, who is the Tigers' longest ever serving head coach, guided the joint venture to its first NRL premiership in 2005 and took them to three finals series during a 10-year tenure that ended in 2012.

Sheens also coached the Australian Kangaroos between 2009 and 2015, before moving to the Super League in 2015 where he took on a role as coaching director at Salford Red Devils followed by coaching stints at Hull KR and Widnes Vikings.

In total the 70-year-old has over 750 games of coaching experience at both club and representative levels, along with an extensive administration experience on his resume, while Sheens became the first non-playing Tigers life member in 2015.

Sheens said he was thrilled to be making a return to the Tigers after almost 10 years.

“I am very much looking forward to returning to Wests Tigers as the new Head of Football Performance,” Sheens said. “This role is extremely exciting as it allows me to work and utilise my experience, especially around pathways, development and talent identification.”

Sheens' return to Concord comes despite a messy exit from the Tigers in 2012, when he was sacked at the end of a disappointing season before taking the club to court.

While his appointment to the head of football department position comes as further reinforcement to Michael Maguire, after the Tigers coach was re-signed to a new two-year deal at the end of last year.

“It’s very pleasing to welcome Tim back to Wests Tigers and see him formally involved with the club again,” Pascoe said.

“Tim knows what it means to be Wests Tigers and has played a major role in shaping all aspects of this club — both on and off the field — to what it is today.

“Having Tim take on this new role will significantly strengthen our football department as a whole. We firmly believe that adding Tim’s experience, knowledge and insight into the game of rugby league will be of huge benefit to Wests Tigers in ensuring sustainability in all aspects of the organisation.”

Maguire was delighted with Sheens' appointment, declaring it another step towards building a sustained culture of success at the Tigers.

“It’s been very pleasing to see the work that has been done in this area already to build longevity and sustained success at the club and it’s great to see the desire and commitment across our entire organisation to ensuring that continues.”

I have heard he is good at implementing junior pathways and all that side of it. Looks at penrith they lost 7 players to origin and that team they ran out was still pretty good (all things considered)
I think it will either be a great either or a shit one. Time will tel..

Sheens signed Braith Anasta ... let that sink in
From memory I thought everyone had had enough of his style, hence he was told to leave, hopefully he has changed, we will see.
I guess I don’t fully understand his position, “a floating role“, sounds wishy washy.

I wouldnt expect him to be involved in first grade coaching at all. I wouldnt think Madge would be OK with that.

Im another who doesnt understand where he sits, with a full coaching compliment, a GM, a CEO and Hartigan.

It is probably only a part time role. How old is he? he probably just wants a semi retired lifestyle, come in a day or two a week to keep busy and help out with his knowledge.

I listened to Gould and Webster on 100% footy new year and some good points were made.
1) The club needs to represent more people
2) They should be based out of South West Sydney region as that's where the growth will be in the next 20 years with housing, airport etc.
3) The club is united when winning but divided when losing or shit isn't going well.
4) Sheens will do well if they contain him to pathways and junior development and Hartigan's job gets much easier if they start to do what Penrith is doing with jnr footy coming into their 1st grade team,
5) Group six felt unloved by the Tigers and asked for Penrith to manage them and Gould said no as Penrith area is huge to manage as is.

Hard to not agree with what he has said on face value.

The thing is it's easy to sprout solutions. It's harder to implement good ideas and even then there is no guarantee the good ideas will add anything at all to the bottom line.

I'd argue we represent a lot of people. I think we are already in the South west. Every team is united when winning but divided when losing and some teams are even worse than this. Look at Penrith sacking Anthony Griffin. Why will Sheens do well if that is all he is doing. Who knows how he will do. As for Group 6 well Gould may remember that as an idea but who says that really happened.

I agree that it's hard to agree with what was said but I think you meant it's hard to argue against. In my opinion it's really easy to argue against.

I think all we need to do to be successful is win a lot of games.

Pretty simplistic.
What is your plan for winning a lot of games?

That isn't simple. We just need to build a good roster which we are but we need to jag a star or two. Watching SOO last night was interesting. There are a couple of players that are levels above everyone else and it shows more now. I don't think you can defend your way to victory regularly.

If we had Tommy T we'd be a good team but you can't just go out and buy a player like that.

I think recruitment and retention though are doing a pretty good job but we need some more outside backs.

Yep.. all the kids from the suburbs and the bush remember him fondly just like it was yesterday . The excitement in the Rugby League world will be going crazy to get onboard the Team Sheenius
Was waiting for it. I knew Mac would be thrilled. Next is Braith as his assistant. Someone get him some free gatorade.
