Sheens poised to hand ageing Anasta challenge and a half

TIM SHEENS is set to make one of the biggest gambles of his coaching career next season by handing Braith Anasta the No.7 jersey.
The Herald has been told Sheens plans to shift Benji Marshall back to his customary five-eighth role, with Roosters recruit Anasta to partner him at halfback.
The Wests Tigers have been the biggest flops of this season, failing to make the play-offs after being premiership favourites at the start of the year. One of the biggest problems was the club's inability to settle on a ''spine'' - the halfback, five-eighth, fullback and hooker - and the halves in particular. All up, the Tigers used nine halves combinations, rotating Marshall, Tim Moltzen, Jacob Miller, Tom Humble, Chris Lawrence, Blake Ayshford, Curtis Sironen, Robbie Farah and Liam Fulton through the six and seven spots.

Anasta has played 251 games in an illustrious career for Canterbury and the Sydney Roosters. However, he has started in the No.7 jersey only once, for the Roosters against Manly in round 17 in 2007.

The former NSW and Australian representative has played 214 games at pivot, one at fullback, five from the bench and the rest at either lock or in the second row. But at the age of 30, he will be asked to take on a new position at a new club.
''That's where Sheens wants to play him; it means Benji goes back to five-eighth,'' a source said.
The experiment, likely to be road-tested in next year's trial matches, will have ramifications for many at the club. Sironen showed promise in his five matches alongside Marshall in the halves, but injury prematurely ended the year of the schoolboys superstar. The latest development could push him into the back row.
Sheens, the Kangaroos coach, is one of league's great innovators, and has held the clipboard for more games than anyone else in NRL history. But the four-time premiership-winning coach's sides have made the finals only three times in the past 15 years. The lean trot has put Sheens under pressure to keep his job, and finding a long-term replacement for Robert Lui remains one of the big challenges.
''If they decide to move me on, then they'll move me on,'' Sheens said after a loss to Melbourne on Saturday night officially killed off the Tigers' play-off hopes. ''That is something out of my control.''

Why else did we buy him if he wasnt going to play half?
Sheens or no Sheens i think Anasta can solve a lot of problems if played at 7 and left there. Still need to harden up the forwards first tho.

It isn't a bad move. He should be good defensively, he has a good kicking game and he seems to take the right option at key times.

I'm not that concerned about the forwards. The problem is the outside backs - we need massive changes there.

Pity we missed out on Gallen with him re-signing with Cronulla. Agree we need a hard ass no-nonsense 2nd rower to replace Ellis. Blair aint it in the 2nd row but maybe I'd be utilising him more as a prop come 2nd rower and push him onto the interchange until he either improves or we shop him out. We've brought Pettybourne and Thompson but I dont know of their reputation.

I'm not gloom and doom for next season as long as we dont do this mad shuffling around of players every damn week and simply replace injured / suspended player with like player from reserves. I dont believe we dont have the depth, we do have pretty good depth, its just they dont seem to get a chance too often. If Sheens stays and WT can stop that trait of his I can live with that.

I'm happy with Anasta at 7 and Benji at 6. Just hope it stays that way and if Anasta is out that a proper 7 from below gets a chance. Safe to say Humble, Chisholm and Miller are going elsewhere for next year so that leaves Moltzen coming up from the interchange.

I think the interchange fro next year could be good if we use Blair, Ayshford and Moltzen plus a big prop. That leaves room i the run on squad for new blood.

Have they? My internet sources say he is still un-signed for next year. I've no problem with him being a back up (or Humble)

I heard that the Dragons wanted him, but apparently he re-signed with the Tigers so the Dragons signed Drinkwater from Manly....

You have got to ask the question - why would they re-sign him?

He must be about their 5th string half back by now...

I've heard Moors is going to Melbourne, Chisholm to Manly and Miller to Dragons.

Comps biggest halfback. Won't need to hide him in the front line.

But he was bought to direct and kick. Is very experienced...

Also if Farah is in your side he does a lot of direction, before a half sees anything.

Perhaps...

Gut says 2nd rower.

Anasta has could potentially be used very effectively. His experience & ability to close out matches ie Golden Point, is much needed. He also offers structure around the ruck, which then allows Benji to play wider & off-the-cuff.

The big question is whether he will be able to over-call Farah in those crutial last few minutes of the game. I am a fan of Farah but often his 5th tackle options have cost us dearly.

Lets hope they use Anasta's strengths, otherwise he will be another dud buy!

It's groundhog day.

Who remembers the last time we signed a player to play 7 on the back of said player having played precisely 0 games at NRL level as a halfback.

It's like signing a Greek JMo

In fairness to Anasta no matter what number is on his back he plays a lot of first and second receiver,i doubt this will change .

Robbie on FOX or TFS the other week said he thought Miller was staying

I can just picture anasta up against a DCE, a Reynolds, Cronk, Mullen etc....they wont have to wait 'til 10 before the break & f/t to look for a slow tiring forward to run at...he'll be there from farkin kick off!

Sheens ... so Marshall to half didn't work - I'll try to turn another 5/8 into a halfback. Because if you're the Sheenius everything must be over complicated. Ordinary coaches would find a half to play half, but not the great Tom Shines.

What else can he do? He's in a bind- recruited Anasta apparently on promise of halfback / fiveeighth role. Marshall has not performed consistently well enough to be the answer at half so, Marshall goes back to 5/8 and Anasta to 7. A regular, normal, stock standard halfback just seems to be out of the question with Sheens for some reason.
