'Hands off' Gidley
By Barry Toohey and Sharon Mathieson
May 20, 2004

NEWCASTLE last night delivered a "hands off" warning to the Sydney Roosters amid allegations the NRL premiership favourites had made an approach to brilliant young halfback Kurt Gidley for next season.

Less than a week after the NRL investigated and cleared the Roosters over anti-tampering claims regarding Brisbane's Darren Lockyer, the Bondi-based club found itself at the centre of a potential storm again.

Knights chief executive Ken Conway confirmed last night his club was told by "an impeccable source" that an approach from the Roosters was made to Gidley's management team.

He refused to divulge the source but the club is taking the allegation seriously.

Conway said the club would have no hesitation in lodging a formal complaint with the NRL if it could uncover conclusive proof.

He spoke with Roosters CEO Brian Canavan yesterday about his concerns and also relayed them to NRL boss David Gallop and salary cap auditor Ian Schubert.

"Somebody this club regards as impeccable has told us of an approach and we trust him," Conway said. "I haven't spoken to Kurt about it but we understand the approach was made to someone within his management team.

"I've spoken to Brian Canavan and he assures me he hasn't made any approach but couldn't guarantee someone else in his organisation hadn't.

"We will certainly be investigating it further and I simply put him on notice that if we get conclusive proof, we will be lodging a complaint with the NRL.

"Both David Gallop and Ian Schubert have been made aware of our concerns but have told us they won't intervene until such time as there is a formal complaint."

Gidley, one of the game's rising stars, comes off contract with the Knights at the end of the season. The club is desperate to re-sign him and have already kicked off negotiations with his manager Darryl Mather.

His value has gone up considerably in the past few weeks as he steered the Knights to a dramatic golden point win over Brisbane last week and was named 18th man for the NSW team this week.

Mather was overseas and could not be contacted last night but he has told the Knights he has not been in contact with anyone from the Roosters regarding Gidley.

"Darryl has told us he hasn't spoken to anyone but could not guarantee an approach had not been made to someone else within his management team," Conway said.

* Test coach Wayne Bennett said in London yesterday Knights superstar Andrew Johns could be rushed into the Australian team for this year's Tri-Nations series if he could get back on the field in time for the NRL finals.

Johns has been sidelined since March with a season-ending knee injury but has hinted he will try to return in mid-September.

* Australia will battle the Kiwis in the first Tri-Nations Test on October 16 at a venue to be determined in New Zealand. Both teams then head to London where they meet for the second time on October 23. Australia faces Great Britain in Manchester on October 30 and at Wigan on November 13. The Tri-Nations final will be held in Leeds on Saturday, November 27.

They already do.

Managers send clubs lists of off-contract players on their books, and clubs get go-betweens to approach the players - all before the 30th June deadline.

It's a farce. And it's impossible to police.

Cheers,
Ben S.

Impeccable source...what a club official that heard a rumour. Gidleys manager said no contact was made.

Me a traitor...my old club thjat I supported became null and void?

StGillaman - FYI this thread, like the other has been moved into Controversy Corner due to the fact it is an off field incident that is controversial and liable to attract a lot of discussion on the matter. This is where such threads of the same matter will normally be placed hence its creation.

Thanks for your time.

;-)

If that's the go these days, and that's the rule here im fine with it, But I have to admit, it is ridiculous to have it moved from the NRL section.
This is todays story. Whether it be right or wrong. I don't beleive it should be moved.

But thanks for the explanation

Newcastle are confident enough about this to speak to the media about it.

Do they do that with every rumor about players being contacted before June 30?

No, it doesn't make this story true, but it suggests that Newcastle belive it did happen.

No club should be allowed to approach until one or two weeks AFTER the Grand Final. And all trades should then happen on ONE day.

The 30 June date is totally unsatisfactory for obvious reasons (players effectively leave clubs mid season then).

And no one can say that it is too hard for a player to make a move for NEXT SEASON at the season's end... there is plenty of time to adjust and get to preseason training.

Mate, you fly off the handle at a moments notice. Your conduct is ordinary - silly name calling etc. Try having a go at reasonable debate and you'll earn more respect.
