Should next years Warriors/Storm ANZAC match be at Eden Park?

This game must stay in Melbourne, it has now built up into one of the premium contests in our calendar.

The makeup of the crowd was strongly in favour of the Storm, which surprised me as I expected more Warriors support. And the amount coming over from the ozzie rules is overstated, it was mostly dedicated Storm supporters.

But it is a terrific selling point for the game down here. I was personally accompanied by two newcomers who were blown away by the atmosphere and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

As a game, we need to hold on to our traditions, as new as they may be and build on them. This is the same reason I would never advocate moving the Sydney game to the Olympic Stadium, even if ten thousand are turned away. They should be kept as premium events for which people eagerly anticipate.

Interesting point about alternating between Eden Park and AAMI Park. Not a bad idea, the problem is timing of the matches. But do you play at 8.00 NZ Time, so its 6.00pm here, just so the matches arent played at the same time.

Or simply tell Channel 9 that the Roosters/Dragon match should be at 3pm, rather than 4pm.

It is a good idea, but I cant see it happening for a while under the current TV deal.

I had a similar experience (i.e. taking two guys from Union backgrounds to the game), they both loved it and want to attend more games.

I think the large ex-pat Kiwi population in Melbourne makes the game a must for Melbourne, I doubt there are a huge amount of Storm supporters in Auckland that will boost the attendance for any games there. Its Melbourne's biggest club game of the year, to f**k it up for the sake of shits and giggles would be stupid.

I like you DQ, was surprised that the majority of fans were Storm supporters, when in previous years it was more Warriors than not.

I think Melbourne are definitely one the biggest attractions for Warriors fans in NZ- probably our number 1 rival. You'd get a good crowd. The Warriors v Melbourne game has amassed quite a bit of history over the years. Despite not being a consistently excellent side like them we've always given them great clashes. Maybe it's because we're both sort of outsiders to the rest of the comp or something.

in terms of rugby league, ANZAC day was just another day. there was nothing special about it. then Easts and the Dragons got together and decided to make it an event. Through our efforts we have created something special.

If the Tigs want a big drawing day then they should go out and do the hard yards and make their own. They shouldn't just expect to freeload off the effort of others

Pretty much this. The NRL doesn't come up with these events. The clubs propose them to the NRL and make them work. I'm pretty sure the away teams get a decent share of gate takings plus all members get tickets. Roosters, Dragons, Bulldogs and Souths shouldn't be punished because other clubs didn't do it first.

Why change something that is so successful. We need to build traditions and stop changing things to suit other clubs. It's one of the reasons the AFL shit all over us for crowd numbers. I'm sure other clubs would love to play on ANZAC Day in the AFL but there is not a chance of it being changed from a Essendon v Collingwood match which is a sell out at the MCG every year

This. We have a good thing going, why change it just as it's starting to become a tradition?

Just having a brief look, no Melbourne game features in the Top 20 largest ever home crowds to Warriors games.

And one Storm game features in there top 20 lowest (6209 in 2007).

Last season was a good crowd of 20K but the year before only 13K.

Well, that's interesting. However, I imagine the top 20 would be full of games in 1995, Eden Park games, and home finals, none of which involve the Storm.

Interested to see the list actually.

The only ones in the top 20 which weren't in 1995, at Eden Park or home finals...

12th: Rd 3 2009 vs Broncos = 25,438
13th: Rd 24 2007 vs Sea Eagles = 25,070
15th: Rd 26 2001 vs Cowboys = 24,568
16th: Rd 22 1996 vs Broncos = 23,980
18th: Rd 7 1996 vs Eels = 23,432
19th: Rd 7 1996 vs Bulldogs = 23,300

The highest ranking Storm games...

29th: Rd 13 2012 = 20,487
43rd: Rd 1 2000 = 19,014
85th: Rd 21 2003 = 15,207

Warriors average home crowds against...

Sea Eagles = 17,785
Broncos = 17,580 (and no Eden Park or home finals to inflate that number either)
Eels = 16,655
Roosters = 16,280
Bulldogs = 14,002
Panthers = 13,716
Raiders = 13,636
Titans = 13,305
Tigers = 13,111
Knights = 12,994
Rabbitohs = 12,947
Cowboys = 12,853
Sharks = 12,818
Storm = 12,713
Dragons = 11,638

So the Storm are practically the worst drawing team that the Warriors get.

So basically playing it in Auckland would be would mean a crowd (on average) of 10K less than the Storm attract.

I went with always in NZ. Australia has a traditional ANZAC Day game, so makes sense to have one in NZ as well.

The Warriors v Storm game had really turned into something really special. Was a great atmosphere last night and the crowd was sensational. Keep it in Melbourne and keep building the games profile here.

No. Keep the game in Melbourne, don't screw with it, build it and make it a game that Victorians want to go to year in/year out as a tradition.

As for other clubs not getting to play on Anzac Day, that's just whinging.

There's a heap of other overlooked holidays that need big games played on them, it just takes some vision to see it.

I agree that there should be an Anzac Day game played in New Zealand. If two Australian fumbleball clubs can do then surely two Australian NRL club could do the same - or better - a second New Zealand side could play in Wellington on Anzac Day

As for Anzac round I'd rather see

* A game in Canberra on Anzac Eve at 7:15pm - try and push an earlier start - again why haven't the Raiders pursued this??
* A game in Wellington on Anzac Day at 2:00pm EST (4:00pm NZ)
* Roosters vs Dragons on Anzac Day at 4:00pm EST
* Storm vs Warriors on Anzac Day at 7:00pm EST
* A game in Townsville that weekend linking with the Army base - likewise, why haven't the Cowboys pursued this??

I reckon the '01 and '07 games were "celebrating cos we already made the top 8 after a long drought" games. '96 games were of course pre-Storm and while capacity was higher. I don't remember the '09 game at all!

Sea Eagles, Eels and Roosters benefit from Eden Park and everyone bar Tigers, Titans, Storm and Dragons benefit from bigger 95/96 crowds. Apart from that it appears crowds are pretty even, except Brisbane who are the biggest draw.
