For those who follow the NFL, you already know what it is. For those who don't, here it is:

A franchise tag is used on a player who is off-contract, and by tagging him, he will be paid the top 5 salary of his position for one year.

Now, if this was introduced in the NRL, it has two main benefits.

1. It allows clubs who are struggling to keep talent to keep their best player.
2. Players who are tagged cannot leave to go to Union/AFL.

Thoughts?

if a player is off contract, how can you make it so they can't leave? if we can't have a draft for legal reasons then i'm sure they will poke holes through this.

Definitely won't work in the NRL, and it's probably not going to be in the NFL (in it's current form anyway) before the start of next season because players hate it.

And it wouldn't have any impact on raids from other codes, actually it'd probably help them as it'd reduce the competition from other NRL clubs. Do you honestly think the AFL or Union are going to care about an NRL rule? They suffer no repercussions if they break it.

LMFAO.... the franchise tag means nothing to a club from another code.

Ive always wondered why the NRL doesnt employ a salary cap consultant from the states. Someone who has an extensive knowledge of mlb, nba, nfl, nhl salary cap rules... maybe even just an experienced journo or something who is a bit more objective (if thats possible)than someone affliated with a code.

It probably wouldnt even have to be fulltime, maybe even just like a consultancy term or something.... surely we could learn a little bit from their complicated salary caps.

I understand there are huggggge differences between us and the states when it comes to domestic sport, and all 4 major sports are practically on the brink of lockdown because of salary cap issues... but surely the nrl has wasted their money on worst things, i dunno.

If you were to take something from the NFL I would look at an injured reserve type thing.

Mate I am a huge NFL fan but the franchise tag is a piece that compliments Fre agency and the draft. Introducing it on it's own makes no sense

The only way to keep players in the game and attract players to the game is to raise the total salary pool. The talent will return if the total amount of money available is increased. There are several ways to do this:

Increase the salary cap, with bigger grants to clubs paid for by increased broadcast revenue
Scrap the cap and introduce a points system then allow club sponsors and businesses to pay for/sponsor individual players, the points system to protect the fairness of the competition
Keep the cap as is and allow a number of players per club to be paid outside the cap by investors/external businesses/club sponsors.

A points system is stupid and flawed.

A player should be paid his market rate, which can fluctuate wildly depending on demand, form, injury etc.
