Should the NZRL get a grant from the NRL?

Given the NRL gets $8mill a year from NZ TV and is only giving less than $4mill back to the Warriors should they be giving the NZRL a grant in the same way they give the ARL a grant to develop the game? Just reading the article about the NZRL turning around their finances and was shocked to see how little income they have and how reliant on the Kiwis playing Int fixtures to earn $'s. Maybe the money News currently takes from the NRL could go to the NZRL and some to the PNG RL to develop the game further in those two countries when the IC comes in and News fricks off?

I actually agree. TBH I'd like to an organisation setup to handle the "development" of rugby league (i.e. non professional) across Australia, NZ, PNG, and the Pacific Islands.

a bit more funding in league down south would be interesting to see what they would do. people down there (chch) love league, esp round my age (20) but not many have played before. they just need to work out how to get them on the pitch.

i say no.... and i only say that because we all know that the NZRL will piss it away...

give it to some area in which they would actually make good use of it.

No. The NRL is an Australian owned and funded organisation. Let the Kiwis fund their own affairs.

If the Warriors get $4m but the NRL gets $8m from NZ TV, then the answer is not to increase the Warriors' grant, but to install another NZ team to get another $4m grant. That way you'd probably increase the NZ TV rights anyway, with one home game each week.

^ good call. A second club somewhere to the south would be a rallying point for the game, build new fans, support player development, et cetera et cetera. That said, I also agree that the NZRL should be getting a share of the TV money based on how much the Kiwi market generates. Especially since they have put in a huge effort to restructure and improve their administration (which some Australian branches of the game could learn from).

We need the Kiwis to be strong. International games, the NZ market and the Warriors are some of the key strengths RL has.

Ideally the NRL would help fund all international organisations, be it NZ, PNG, Fiji or South Africa. But it'll never happen.

NZ is a huge potential growth market for the NRL.

Whether they should give the money to the NZRL or just run joint NRL/NZRL promotional and developmental campaigns I'm not sure, but they definitely should be doing a lot of work and a lot of marketing in NZ.

The potential for increasing the value of the NZ TV rights, increased merchandise sales and more kids playing RL is huge.

There is - the Pacific Nations (non Aus and NZ) have formed a Governing Body

We need to stop thinking that the ARLC should be managing this

You see the conflict of interest that will come up if a NZ based club is allowed to "own" RL in Australia via 1/16th ownership of the ARLC as proposed by News Ltd

What would the TV deal be worth if Auckland were NOT playing in the NRL. That is the amount that is attributed to the other 15 clubs and the best comp in the world. The Warriors are coming along for the ride

If there was no NZ team in the NRL then there would be about as much incentive for them to watch it as they would to watch the AFL... i.e. nil.

To support the second NZ team, interesting to note the Wellington Phoenix are about to sell out Westpac Stadium for their semi against Newcastle Jets in the A-League. I suspect if football can pack out the cake tin then there is a great chance rugby league could do some at least solid numbers in the capital. Plus, when the Phoenix took a game down to Christchurch they attracted 19,000, so perhaps 2-3 games in Christchurch as well and I'm sure you'd haev a more then solid turn out.
