Should we have a Bronze medal final at future World Cups?

Now that we are at the point where arguably 5 nations are capable of winning a World Cup, I was wondering should we look to add a Bronze Medal / 3rd Place Play-Off match in future tournaments?

If we had something in place for this tournament and 2017, we would have ended up with two quality match ups in Fiji v Tonga and then New Zealand v England and arguably two matches, both I feel could have sold very well and drawn decent TV audiences.

For France 2025, you're likely to end up with any combination of Australia, New Zealand, England, Tonga, Samoa & Fiji, which again would be a quality international in its own right, even if it's not for the World Cup title.

Not a bad idea. Only thing is you wouldn't want to take away from the final ticket sales if the host nation is in the bronze game. Certainly something Id canvas the players opinions on.

I am wondering what will happen in the years to come with Tonga/Samoa/Fiji/Cook Islands as currently players born in Australia are able to play for either of these countries if a Parent or Grandparent was born in either of these countries.

Eventually that wont be the case though

The International Rugby League needs a plan to develop the game in more countries to increase the number of participating countries in a RLWC.

Fiji will be fine, they have the pathways in place from domestic Fiji league, to the Silktails in the NSWRL system who will consistently produce NRL players for them. PNG is the same with the Hunters. Give it five to ten years and PNG and Fiji will be where Samoa and Tonga are now.

It’s a good point, though there’s still loads of kiwis moving to aus every year so probably will continue for a long time to come.

Personally not a fan of the concept.

Would prefer to see a double header between emerging nations from nearby the host country or region.

Held in a nearby touristy location to the final venue.

So using this year....something like Netherlands v Poland and /or Germany v Serbia in Blackpool on the night before the final.

It becomes a ranking game at best

I prefer we play 4 bottom pool teams in a small 2 round series

And 3rd last teams in a 2 round series

QF Week - A v C, B v D
SF Week - Winners play, Losers play

Top team play regularly. But lower placed teams once every 4 years in many cases
