Signs of hope IF tough decisions are made

Our defensive structure was vastly improved last night. This gives cause for hope as we we without the ball for much of the game against the supposed hottest attacking unit in the NRL. Most of the team showed commitment and pride, and some of the younger and newer players look to be ready to make a significant impression.

We are being held back by several very problems, and I think it frustrates the fan base that they seem SO OBVIOUS, yet there is a failure to rectify them week after week.

If we want to have a succesful season, the following needs to happen ASAP:
1. King needs an extensive stint in PL to regain form and confidence. 23 metres in attack, crucial missed tackles and dumb penalties. The same thing happens week after week after week. I defy someone to name a poorer starting prop in the NRL at the moment. His replacement to be either Cuthbertson or Rose.

2. Burns needs to be retained at 5/8th as he played with passion and tougness last night. Given time he will gel into a good combination with Orford.

3. The hooker conundrum needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. Ballin has been extremely impressive in trials and PL. He should be the starting hooker as he has silken attacking skills and is tough in defense. Monas to be the bench man as he too has been very good defensively and also provides cover for the halves. Monaghan was poor in attack in the first twenty minutes last night but his defense and the ability to run at tiring forwards late in each half would be good off the bench. Dunley back to PL as I rate Ballin a better player and Dunley gives away too many dumb penalties.

4. Monas to be the only "back" on the bench. We need three forwards on the bench. Why have a winger (Stephenson) there? If Rose is picked in place of King, then Cuthbertson MUST take the spot of Williamson. Williamson to gain a reprieve if Cuthbertson is considered adequate replacement for King.

5. Thought given to the possibility of starting Williamson and keeping the ageing Menzies on the bench for his impact. It has worked for the Blues in Origin.

Do you honestly think that dropping elbows, knees and forearms into tackles is tough? It's cheap, thuggish and dirty.

Well, it's hard to get motivated when hacks are being picked ahead of you.

Geez, he'll be even less motivated when he remains unsigned beyond the June 30 deadline. Lets hope he turns up at Cronulla next year

I just hope he ends up somewhere (except the ESL) where he'll get a fair go.

what's wrong? Sully not going too well over in England?

you really do have an eye for talent don't you? ;-)

I like to think I have an eye for talent. :)

Sully isn't doing well over there. The cold and the lower standards of the ESL have dragged his shaky game down even further.

the main problem is we use both monas & oford as equal attacking options the fact is matty must have 90 % of the ball in attack around the halves monas is tough & all we have. Matty must have the ball around the halves most of the time eg lockyer broncos so brett stewart and steve bell get good ball. As for hooker dunley is not a hooker a mick sullivan good off bench we must blood ballin, with the expected suspension of kylie, curtbo will play for sure but we must when soon the comp is that close, THE KEY MATTY OFORD MUST GET MOST OF THE ATTACKING BALL AROUND THE HALVES.

I'm going to say it now. I doubt Witt will get another run in the NRL at Manly unless we cop 2 injuries in the halves/hooker.

King needs to be dropped but with Lulu suspended for 2 weeks and Rose may be injured, I bet he doesn't get dropped. I actually have to wonder if he would get dropped anyway... I really can't see why Des persists with him.

In the off season I was sure Mona's would work at Hooker, but I really am starting to think he may have to stay at 5/8 as he just doesn't have the passing game for Hooker. His passes appear slow and wayward. Example was the poor pass to Chris Hicks. He over estimates his ability to spiral pass and the pill drops on the ground. He also seems completely unwilling to stand behind the play the ball to pass to the halfback.

The other real concern is Mona's left to right passing game looks fairly ordinary. This means the ball tends to go to the left more, but our best attacking weapons in Bell and Hicks are out on the right and frankly are not getting enough ball to tear teams apart. Stewart also seems to prefer to run to that side as well.

I think we would have got that final try if Stewat had of used his hands and speed to get the ball out to the wing, rather than kick it. In fact I swear he could have just dummied and gone over.

And the other thing that could solve the shortage of ball out on the right would be some quick dummy half runs. What has happened to our dummy half running game???

There's too much dummy half running I reckon. It's very predictable.

Thank god coaches salaries don't come under the salary cap :D .

This may be a bit premature but I just hope Manly have a suitable replacement in mind...:? Seeing as Manly only really like to recruit coaches from within the fold. There is not that many options?

Toovey - untried at NRL
Mal Reilly - Yes please!
John Lang - Left field.
