Simms - "Saints are Real Madrid"

Steve Simms claims St Helens are the Real Madrid of Rugby League and that the saintly ones have the finest array of talent in the world and would easily compete in the NRL.

He also mentioned on local radio that this current lineup is "The best British side EVER".

I can't agree with that last comment . They are a good team but certainly not the best British side ever . They are being shackled a bit by Anderson's tactics . The Saints of a few years ago would never be out of a game no matter what the scoreline . You just can't see this team coming from behind to win in an almost inevitable way like the Saints of recent past did . The carefree throw the ball anywhere style of play seems to have been sacrificed for a more conservative ( for Saints anyway ) gameplan . They are probably a more accomplished side defensively than the Saints of old but for me are not as clinical offensively . I reckon the Saints team that played under Hanley , sound defence coupled with attacking flair , was the best Saints team I've seen .

The only thing I find strange is that he is being so gushing about Saints. Perhaps Salford are looking to sign a Saint for next season?

Yeah, that's the strange thing for me, sides don't even play each other again this year, so it's not mind games. Maybe Simms is looking for a change of scenery in the future?

If Saints are Real Madrid what would that make Wigan? Hmmm..

It's a great St. Helens side, on pure talent it's quite possibly the best British side ever. The fact that they regularly have to leave an international foward out of their lineup is a testament to their depth. They'd certainly be a top 8 side in the NRL, and if they had a better coach then they'd be in the top 3.
