You can vote for whoever you like for whatever reason you like.

But generally you try to get a clue from how their behaving.

What they're saying. What they're not saying. Is someone posting a lot a sign of something. Is someone being a mute a sign of something, etc etc etc.

Of course a large amount of it depends on your role.

In a perfect world, you'd judge based on how other players have been behaving. Day one is always just a cluster-f**k in which somebody is randomly lynched and it all goes to hell. 2 out of 3 times it's a townie (the proportion of town to threats is usually about that), but sometimes you get lucky and you lynch a bad guy right out of the gate.

There are two different schools of thought. Some hate the random lynch and opt to vote for nobody. Others like their odds.
