It says clearly in the first post that the mafia are known to each other, I was also mafia for the last third of the last game, and I knew who the other mafia members were.

Unless you are talking about the 3rd party characters I genuinely don't know how you came to that conclusion. Unless of course you know first hand.

I thought Frederick was talking about the third parties as well as the mafia.

Otherwise he was indicating that the mafia would all vote the same way which is at best a ridiculous notion.
