Sims loving life under stone

NEW Knights signing Tariq Sims is relishing pre-season training under head coach Rick Stone.

Sims, 24, played under Stone when he was the Fiji coach at the 2013 World Cup.

That short stint gave the barnstorming former Cowboy a taste of what to expect when he joined Newcastle, and Stone is living up to his reputation as a coach who has the ultimate respect from his players.

“At the World Cup I learned so much from Stoney on and off the field, as a player and a person,” Sims says.

“I’m just loving the opportunity that I have got here to play under him.

“Rick knows when to have a laugh and play jokes on people, but he is a bloke that demands a lot of respect.

“To get the most out of your players, you’ve got to have that.

“When he says to do something, everyone does it because everyone holds him in such high regard.

“He has done his apprenticeship and it is just good to see he has got that head role.”

“He is a great coach and I’d like to think I’ll learn a lot off him and people like Bedsy (assistant coach Danny Buderus).

“I’ve already learned a fair bit off skipper Kurt Gidley in the first week too.”

Sims showed great courage and application to come back from two broken legs that he suffered in his four seasons with the Cowboys.

But those injuries are well behind him, although he is still a stickler for adhering to the strength program the club has him on.

“Coming to Newcastle is a very positive move for me and I am very happy with where I am at the moment training wise and body shape wise,” Sims says.

“I am feeling the fittest I have in a while.

“I had a lot of help from the North Queensland staff nursing me back to 100 per cent, and down here in Newcastle I have just picked up where I left off.

“They have got me on a strength program for my leg and are helping me develop as a player.

“Coming back from those serious injuries, it is never fully healed, so you have to do everything in your power to keep fit and keep strengthening it.

“I am really loving my time here at the Knights so far.”

You get the impression the boys are ready to play FOR Stoney and bleed for the jumper if Tariq's words are any yardstick. That alone is a very positive sign. You never got that talk out of Boyd.

Darius has neen looked after pretty much his entire snr career and really hasn't had to be accountable for much ie form slumps. He was in the comfort zone when playing for us.

So awesome to hear. Got everything crossed we'll see the Sims brothers try and one up each other basically week in and week out. Excited is an understatement.

Stone has got a team few NRL coaches get. One with plenty to prove and more importantly one that respects his authority but is not intimidated by him either. That is the difference between him and Bennett. The boys were in awe of Bennett's reputation but he never really was their leader. I doubt many went to Wayne and told him to try this or that. I have rarely seen Bennett admit he was wrong. It was always about them not buying into his philosophy. A cop out in my book.

We have the cattle mate and more importantly we have a close club now that Bennett has left and been shown up for who and what he is really about. Brisbane won't go anywhere near the title. Where is the depth? Hoffman and Barba did nothing wrong to deserve what happened to them. I don't see you acknowledging the fact they got sacked to suit an agenda while under contract. Bennett is an opportunist. Let's see what happens when injury hits your beloved club. Your forward pack is soft. We have the most aggressive backrow in the comp. Adam Blair is a myth. One decent season under Bellamy. Big deal.

You questioning the best coach to ever coach in the NRL, bitter much?

You cant win a premiership if you dont have the cattle and newcastle surely don't have the cattle.

Bennett brought a lot of players to the club to build the team he wanted only to miss the eight twice in 3 years. Certainly not the best coach in the NRL over recent years.

As you said though, he has the cattle in Brisbane now, at least 7 current Aus, NZ and/or origin players in the squad. Should go well. McGuire unlucky not to play for Aus as well.

McGuire was Sheenius'd out of an Aus jumper. The difference between Bennett at Newcastle and Bennett at Brisbane is that outside players don't mind playing for Brisbane. Bennett will do well at Brisbane again, I've got zero doubt. Look at how the NRL sea has parted since he went back there for him - players leaving the club voluntarily, players signing on immediately afterwards. It's all too easy for him up there, I don't blame him for going home. I would too if I had a saloon passage to another premiership attempt.

It's pitiful that broncos2010 can't enjoy the trajectory of his club without rubbing it in everyone's face.

Wasn't it 450K???

Jeezusss, just read the Roy masters article re the Broncs salary cap bs. Will be interesting if ASIC want to know more.

Surely BLC and Gee are in a precarious position under the Corporations Act and with ASIC.

The Corporations Act requires an auditor to report to ASIC (within 28 days) where it has reasonable ground to suspect a significant contravention of the Corporations Act . Note 19 in the annual report suggests the BLC auditor informed ASIC. The real question is how it was characterised or explained to ASIC. This is relevant because the auditor with the obligation to report to ASIC (Pitcher Partners) is the same auditor that, during previous audits, has missed the (unapproved) funds flowing out to Gee in prior years. By the company's own admission these payments were not approved by the board or members, yet they were missed by the auditor as well. The money just vanished but as mysteriously as that happened, it was returned. No harm, no foul.

Gee was a director of Broncos Leagues Club and an employee of the football club.

The Corporations Act provides for criminal sanctions where a director recklessly or intentionally acts dishonestly or uses their position directly or indirectly to gain an advantage for themselves. Based on what appears to have occurred - and what is now confirmed in BLC's audited financial statements - Andrew Gee would have some explaining to do, which probably explains why not talking to the NRL was the lesser of two evils he was facing.

In the same way as the Russians believe the story on their 2018 World Cup bid is dead, so do the Broncos. But in terms of BLC, there is still a fair bit of explaining to do - not to the NRL but to ASIC, their members and the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

Was there any reason why the Knights didn't make a play for Ashton Sims as well? He had a great season and is going off to England way too early.

Superfraud Bennett will do fine up in Brisbane with Andrew Gee and the missing 300k

Interesting isnt it ? I somehow think we havent been told the full story there. No doubt " missing money " goes on everywhere, its just a matter of being found out. This is the big issue facing the game IMO . It compromises the integrity of the game itself. fans want to support a competition where everyone is on a level playing field not one where a chosen few seem to be able to operate on a different level.

Personally I hope Bennett falls flat in Brisbane.

I remember reading an interview which suggested we did make an offer but Ashton was offered more money to head to England and has a young family.

I think not making a more aggressive push for Ashton was big error by us. He is a naturally aggressive dude. He makes solid yards and has natural passion for the game. The three brothers together would be special and by God would it be an interesting sight if one of them got into a blue with an opposing player. Talk about shit getting real. It will be most interesting though if Korbin and Tariq get picked for origin given Tariq is NSW and Korbin Qld. That would be a first. two brothers playing for opposing states.
