SJ on Sterlo

Anyone watch it?

Heard it was a really interesting insight, that he was calling plays in the last 5-10 mins in Brisbane but was ignored, then blew up at Chad 's final play. I was blowing up that he didn't handle the ball enough at the time.

I saw a clip of it on NRL360. He was wandering around telling people what to do when he had been missing tackles and wasn't seen in general play.

Perhaps he thought he couldn't tackle with the earpiece in.

This kind of thing, the miced-up players, is distracting and the NRL should ban it straight away. If not the NRL then the coaches.

It was great I thought. Showed SJ displaying a lot of leadership qualities and really marshalling guys around.

He was fuming that they kept going to the left in those late stages, fair enough considering they were just peppering Maranta who had been more than up to the task all game.

I suspect Friend will be a bit more inclined to swing it his way this week given SJ gave him a serve, Mannering got a serve as well.

But yeah the best bit was the way SJ was getting everyone organised in attack, and he was very vocal to the troops about how the game was playing out. Some people criticise Mannering for not talking much, SJ appears to be picking up the slack in that regard.

I didn't see it, but did Friend and Mannering return serve... unfortunately when you play shit, and miss easy tackles your communications become less effective

Haven't seen the clip yet, but its good if Johnson is trying to do a lot of talking and organising.

In the dying stages when you're looking for that million dollar play SJ has to be the go-to guy every time.
Only he and Hurrell can really create something from nothing.

It shouldn't matter if he was missing tackles or made a few poor kicks. He is still the shot called and the players around him should respect that. In fact I would be dirty at a 7 if he went in to his shell after a few errors.

An ear piece??

It was fine... It's no different to the GPS all the players wear every game.

Horseshit...

He's the halfback... You f**king listen to your halfback.

Darren Lockyer was one of the most ineffective tacklers in the history of the game... But I can tell you he never had any communication problems...

Other than his voice obviously...

I don't mind the ear piece idea, but the ref-cam got pretty annoying.

It was interesting to see glimpses of normal play, maybe not live but replays.
But when it turned into whinge cam it just sucked.

Lockyer had a different style of communicating, and mana!

But while Johnson should be the go to guy, and the leader... he's not yet doing that - still has deficiencies, and still drifts in and out of the game - Townsend, while having a small proportion of Johnson's talent) is at least there most plays, being organised, and thinking ahead... Johnson will I trust get there, but he's not yet

If that is reflective of what usually happens in games Mcfadden will have to take re stock.

Friend is the problem. Hooker determines what side of the ruck the ball goes to.
Hooker decides whether to listen to or ignore the half.

Townsend had nothing to do with all those plays for the Bomb on the Left. Johnsons screaming over all of them for the ball.

Mcfadden has to get his hookers onside.....or get rid of them / replace them.

When they ran moves Johnson was calling they scored.

When Friend did his own thing.....not so much.

The other reveal about that clip is Simon Mannering needs to be replaced at Captain by Johnson, dudes got other players screaming at him to stick to their process most odd indeed.

I thought his interactions with Mannering were a bit weird.

Mic was only on Johnson, so pretty difficult to determine who was calling what - both the times the ball went to Townsend there were reasonable plays on - Mannering hit a half hole and lost the ball, and the bomb is a reasonable option.

Not sure why a piece in which Johnson was wired up, would lead to criticism of Friend and Mannering...

Johnson was doing what a half should do, but perhaps his call isn't the automatic go to...

it's an interesting clip - they were unusual - but really just a half being vocal.

Like I said above, more or less all you get is what Johnson's saying, so his is the only behaviour you can really comment on... and as we know, his decision making is still developing, so the assumption that Friend and Townsend got it wrong just because Johnson threw his hands in the air is a bit much tbh
