The proof is in the cool heads in big games...and Slater is infamous for doing rather nutty things at crucial moments, or basic errors that a so-called top player should not make. And that's the arguement here. I don't think anyone is denying Slater is a good player...but does he deserve his best status that Aussie commentators, and these people selecting award recipients seem to think he does? For me personally, no he doesn't, simply on the grounds for some good moves he does, he does some ****ing stupid ones as well. So IMO he isn't even the best fullback in the game, let alone player full stop. It's hard to judge against Stewart this year as he's been out, but previous to that he's murdered sides as well as Slater, without the brain explosions. Hayne, despite me getting sick of the 'Hayne Plane' wank that went on, was brilliant and unsurpassed when on form. Whether his form remained consistant is another matter...but I still do not recalled something crazy by him at a crucial moment, unlike Slater.
Slater this year, plumb dropping the high bomb is a mistake rather than a brain explosion. And despite noone being anywhere near him and a professional F/B should eat those up, plainly the pressure just got to him.
The '08 World Cup final though...wow. That was a brain explosion of historic proportions, almost on par with his letting slip about signing two storm contracts on the Good Morning show! ;-)
