Sledging on the Footy Field

Port Adelaide defender Brett Montgomery has escaped report and possible suspension despite being found to have vilified Essendon's Adam Ramanauskas about his cancer treatment last Sunday.

Montgomery was fined $2000 for what both he and the AFL deemed inappropriate remarks during the final quarter of the Power's thrashing of the Bombers at AAMI Stadium.

Montgomery is believed to have told Ramanauskas: "The chemo's been f------ with your head, you wanker," after the Essendon star had "verballed" Port players about their poor finals record.

Originally, I was thinking the AFL was going to far with the recent threats to players regarding sledging on the field. However, after this incident I think maybe they are right. Then again, I don't know, sledging has always been part of the game, however this incident and racial slurs I think is taking it a bit to far.

What do you think? Should the AFL come down even harder on sledging or leave what's said on the field on the field as perhaps it is merely in the heat of the moment?
