Couldnt give a toss tbh. Its been the best year of league I have seen in 10 years. The product is good, that is what attracts fans. That game tonight, in front of that crowd would have had the AFL sh*ting their gear about western sydney.

i understand to a point what people are saying regarding sonny fai being mentioned with this article... however are you saying that the incident was not horrible for rugby league?

the paranoid fanaticism on this site scares the sh*t out of me sometimes.

I was so appalled by this that I felt the need to email the following to Magnay to get it off my chest:

Good job and you got the result we all wanted. A testament to power of the people/

However, this would be a good opportunity for the Daily Telegraph to strike a low blow against the Herald. If they could print this and really highlight how low it was for the Herald to print, It could start a media war between the two which in turn would ultimatly give Rugby League the sympathy vote.

The SMH has just decided to make note about the BAD stuff that has gone in with league this year...

http://www.smh.com.au/interactive/2009/league-annus-horribilis/index.html

What is worse...they've included Sonny Fai's drowning as a "negative headline"...among the likes of Greg Inglis, Greg Bird, Todd Carney and the like.

To me...and its probably from a biased point of view...I see that as incredibly disrespectful...I see that as entirely pathetic on the SMH behalf.

No wonder the merkins didn't want to help promote what we were doing at the start of the year, they don't have a heart between them and just like death-riding. Pathetic conduct.

Well said and totally agree, I for one thought what you and Jesbass and others did for the Fai famiy and in Sonny's memory was outstanding, forget the negative media.

The AFL have done a deal with Fairfax media for positive coverage and editorial space just like they forged with News LTD.

This also extends to Fairfax radio where stations like 2UE sometimes run AFL sports stories in their news ahead of RL ones. There is always AFL news on Fairfax news bulletins these days, even non-Swans rubbish.

And as for the SMH, if ever a paper gives a code disproportionate coverage compared to actual popularity it's that rag with fumbleball.

RL has a week a great publicity (fights its way of the canvas yet again) yet that only serves to up the blood pressure of the anti-RL brigade of which their are plenty in the media, particularly at the SMH.

The anti-league agenda of the SMH shows how irelevant it is in news media, at a time when the game is at a all time high in terms of crowd figures,tv ratings etc the negative slant taking by the Fairfax media can't make a dent in those figures.

There was always going to be almanac-style recounts of the year of bad events, but the Sonny Fai bit was completely unnecessary, and shouldn't have been included amongst such incidents. And they could've timed it a bit better too.

Why do it at all?

on the day of one of the biggest games in Sydneys history this is how they report the game http://www.smh.com.au/interactive/2009/league-annus-horribilis/index.html

worse than news ltd

Timing is dreadful but to even include Sonny Fai's name in that list is a blight on the name of a decent, respectable young man who was taken from us far too soon!

Shame on you SMH. Was probably Magnay!
