Just heard on the local radio that Craig Smith will sign another one year deal today. Great news.

Fantastic! How much depth are we going to have next year in the engine room.

Davico!
Smith!
Perry!
Woolnough!

Surely 2 out of 4 can be available at any 1 time!

Great News, it will give us some great depth through the bench next year.

Imagine how well he can play with a full off season under his belt.

Things are really looking up

That is really great news. He has been one of our best all season 2005 and I'm happy to hear he'll be around next year :D

Awesome.

That's fantastic news. I was a little scepticle at the beginning of the season when we signed him, but he's proven himself and I've come to respect and appreciate the guy. In his short time at our club he's already stamped himself into supporters hearts with his consistant gutsy efforts and good attitude.

thats great news, i thought at the start of his contract he might still be a bit hot headed and cost a couple of games with silly penalties, but he's been really good, and will be again next season, with more time to rest.

Well done you guys. Last I heard they had no money left for Smith which would have been a shame. Since they announced they had spent all their cap it looks like Steve Crowe has been oon a spending spree.

Maybe he thought a new sponsor means a larger cap LOL

That is sensational news  Next year is really starting to look the goods, provided we finally get a break from those damn evil football gods with regards to injuries.

As did I. He had a big problem with lifting his knees for a while there at St George, from memory. He was pretty much banished to England because of numerous run-ins with the judiciary. I think we're seeing a far better player now.

It was last night that convinced me that I respected Smith. I was already disappointed that we had heard talk he wouldn't be offered a contract. His form this year has been incredible. But on NBN News last night he said he was really enjoying himself, and you could see it in his eyes. He's ready for another year, and his body seems to agree. The man has tremendous pride in his new colours -- he strikes me as a passionate man... a real asset for the club if he signs up for another year.

You're right -- we'd have a pretty good engine room (with Buderus at Hooker and his understudy Quigley on stand-by if Danny is injured). My only concern is that all four players are injury-proned:

- Smith simply because he's getting on in years.
- Davico has had ongoing problems, hence the reason we picked him up... in the hope he would be a bargain like Smith.
- Perry can't manage to stay on the field for more than a few games (case in point his current injury -- just a few weeks after returning) and is suspended the rest of the time.
- Earlier in the year, Woolnough was ruled out of football indefinately. There was a time there when I didn't think he'd be back, certainly not in 2005. I think his neck/back problems still plague him... it's the sort of thing that might hang around.

We'll see how we go. I'm sure I can be forgiven for being a bit skeptical about our four props, especially after three seasons of injury.

To me Snowden could be the next big thing prop wise big and fast he just needs to get angry and aggressive.

He will not have a 1st grade spot as a backrower anytime soon, with Newton, Simpson, Tanner, Abraham and Reynoldson in front of him.

While he potentially could blow Tolar and Woolnough off the park if starts acting like the big nasty powerhouse that he could be.

Injuries will occur -- players like Tolar and Snowden will get their opportunities. I actually think Snowden will be a much better player than Tanner, Lowrie, Mueller or anyone of that league next year anyway. He isn't rated as the most promising forward in the lower-grades for no reason.

A likely pack:

8. Perry
9. Buderus
10. Davico
11. Simpson
12. Newton
13. Abraham

14. Woolnough
15. Smith
16. Reynoldson
17. Brown

18. Snowden -- he would need to press for Woolnough's spot in a full-strength pack. When was the last time we had a full-strength pack though?

Excellent news. To me Smith is an ideal starter. I'm not sold on Davico yet, at his peak he'd have walked into our run on, but he has been out for the better part of two years. I'd like to see Smith and Perry start until Davico gets some game time under his belt.

I think there will be a few others in the forwards equation Sam. Danny Vaughan was very impressive in the game on Sunday, given he has done next to no weights training, or fitness training I think a good off season will see him pressing for a bench spot, I think also that Matt White has been the best prop in premier league this season, and another good off season by him will see him knocking on the door as well. Reynoldson may be pushing to get a start at either backrow or prop as it looks ATM.

In all honesty, who would you put to the bench in flavour of vanilla Reynoldson? I don't rate him ahead of any of our starters, and he's lucky to even be on the bench with the form he's shown this year (and during his time at Melbourne).

I wonder if the club has entertained the thought of offloading Reynoldson, he seems a bit unnecessary at this point particularly at his pay grade.

It would be worth a thought. I'd hate to see a his sort of money running around in PL.

I guess I phrased that incorrectly. I meant he would be pushing to get a start in first grade including a bench spot. Like you chris what I saw of him early on didn't impress much, and yes Nuffy it would be a good move if we could unload him, but really on the money he's getting who's going to take him off our hands?
