Smithy doesn't learn

Brian Smith still believes in giving recycled players ago, when will he learn that these are the reasons he has not won a premiership for the last 20 years of coaching. When the pressure is on they don't perform and they have cost us plenty of games:

Paul caridge
Kusto
Shane Wherrate
Matt Peterson
Jason Moodie
Kataverata- I'll wait and see what he does this weekend.

Why would u put a Winger in a 3/4 posy just because they have been "enthusiastic" in the off season it doesn't make sense, Why did we buy Junior Langi for??, how would he be feeling seeing that walking f**k up Peterson in front of him at 3/4??

Where the Hell is Armitt? AI'm sure he would of been a better option than both Stapleton and Peek.

This would have been My team:

Burt
Wise
Vaeleki
Lyon
Dykes
Witt
Wagon
Cayless
Hindmarsh
Vella
Moriss
Pearson

Hopkins
Pearson
Armitt
Peek/Stapleton

Now have a look at Smiths team and then tell me which team would u prefer???????? Brian Smith should be praying that he wins this weekend because if the team that he has selected (and I hope pulls some changes before kick off) doesn't win then calls for his sacking should be made. Ive tried to defend smith but this weeks team selection has lost me.

Hold on Jake.

you accuse smith of recycling players.

Then include Wise in your own team???

As I said in a previous post, I believe benefit of the doubt should be given, after all, how closely have you watched them in the off season?

I cant believe Matt Petersen keeps getting bagged, but what has he done wrong?

This guy is a goer, he scores plenty of good tries, makes a few good yards. The last few times he's made a mistake is when he got sin-binned in that Manly game last year, and bombed a try against Souths, that's it.

But to compare him with some usless rejects like Kusto, Carige, Herron, just suprises me.

Jake, I agree with you on Chris Armit. He should be given a go ahead of Stapleton, he's young and fresh. For some ridiculous reason our future star players are playing in PL, Witt and Armit. When they should be playing first grade.

Should play Wagon in the centres. We really need some options there. Lyon Vaealiki is a good combo but what happens at state of origin time. And god forbid one of them be unavailable or dreadfully out of form.

1. Vaealiki/Burt
2. Wise Guy
3. Lyon
4. Wagon
5. Peterson
6. Burt/Witt/Dykes/Thorman
7. Witt/Dykes
We have plenty of depth in the forwrds but these backs need to be tested early to ascertain their abilities

Also O'Dwyer needs a chance

Gruzka is the backs aswell

There are many options that need a go

Sorry Jake, but this post is the one that has broken the camels back for me............

I didnt realise you guys were at all the trials, and all the taining sessions of course you know who should be in the team.

Armitt hasn't played first grade football in how long..... Exactly.
Junior Langi hasn't played first grade in how long...... Thankyou.

When your 20 or 21 or whatever, if you can't cope with being in first division then you will be too impatient to suceed anyway. If they are good enough/smart enough, they will know that when their opportunity comes, they will make the most of it.

And Jake you whinge about recycled players yet you also have Pearson and Peek starting! Be one way or the other. Carige was hardly recycled, just poo and Moodie and Wherat have 70 odd tries between them at Parra and came to the club at about the same age as Dykes was when he came, and you have him in your team to!

I'd also like to know about the other "recycled" players brought to the club during Smith's time like Dymock, Dean Pay, Jason Smith, McCracken etc....

You are entitled to your opinion. But if you just don't like Brian Smith, just say you don't like him and stop making up bogus arguements with massive flaws and no substance.

That goes for the rest of you sooks as well!

I'm just saying that Wagon in the Centres would be a great ploy if we lose one of our centres. They should have tried it in the trials but now that is too late so I thought that maybe give it a go earlier in the season.

Jake it was OK to recycle a certain Jason Taylor wasn't it? Yeah that one didn't turn out too bad did it? Jason Moodie was a great player for us, just because age was getting the better of him last year should take nothing away from his consistent performances for us over several strong seasons. Lee Hopkins, another 'reject' picked up from the Panthers for a pittance and just looking 'for a go'. Adam Peek was a Souths reject signed for next to nothing on a first division contract last year and he is now in the first grade squad and has been one of our best forwards in the trials. And who was Brad Drew before he came to Parra? That's right, a nobody, a reject from the Panthers! Do I really need to go on?

This crap about Matt Peterson is seriously getting very tired. The guy averages about a try a game and i'm yet to ACTUALLY WITNESS one of his alledged 'brain explosions' or 'f#%k ups'. I think it must be the hair...he looks silly therefore he must be hopeless? #-o

I've said it before and i'll say it again....PRE-MATCH JITTERS! You guys are crapping your pants hard and just focusing on the negatives! Just relax, take a chill pill and let's see how things pan out in Round 1 atleast.

I actually prefer Wagon in the centers anyway.
He has worked well there before and it gets him away from the playmaking which he has none.

Top Defender though.

Yeah i agree...I think people need to settle down and see what happens im not happy about Sideshow bob in the centers as well but you never know.

I can see why some people are getting annoyed at Smith with that currant lineup as i don't like Wagon being at 5/8 either.

But lets see what happens during the game and then we can bag Smith if it doesn't work and its only Round 1 anyway.

I feel Smith gets too much SHIT for all this "Recycled" players rubbish as he has proved before that he can turn a players carrer around...Taylor,Peek,Drew,Hopkins,Peterson etc etc did nothing at other clubs and then set the world pretty much on fire at the Eels...With the players we got this year in Wise,Kaufusi,Langi and Pearson the talent is there we just have to wait a little bit to see if they can delvop under Smiths Coaching.

No - but can you tell me if that side will be the same as the one in Rnd 26?

There is a lot opf football between now and when we start talking premierships Jake. And chances are the team will be very different come the last round.

To be honest I'd rather SMith's team.

At least it has 13 starting players and 17 in total. LOL. (Sorry mate just kiddin'!)

Seriously though, that thought process right there is why certain players that might deserve a rep call-up (eg: Gower, Campbell, Burt, Wesser) based on form will not.

Example: last season, Gus insisted that the NSW squad would be chosen based on form. Well, who was our halfback? Joey. Now, Joey did a fantastic job and all, but based on form, he was NOT the best halfback in the competition. Likewise Gidley.

It's just that people see players as 'not perfect enough' and thus they are overlooked for selection. But I think it is a pity. I would like to see a good honest player try his best and enjoy himself like Petersen than a hot-and-cold player like 'Temper Tantrum' Tahu.

Plus at this stage e have no idea what certain players are going to be like. Nobody has seen Muzza in a First Grade NRL match in 2004 yet, in ANY position.

And that is another thing. It's not as though he was named at prop. He was named at centre. Sure, I'd prefer Langi or Freshy at #4, but it's not like his role will DRASTICALLY change.

I hope the team will be different at R26, look Smith is great tactical coach and I have said this many times but player seletions have let us down in the past. I hope I am proved wrong by the players and Smith this weekend because I want Parra to win against the scum.

* Wagon in the centres - not a bad idea, especially having him marking up against Bill Williams. If this guy is really that good, wouldn't you want to have one of your top defenders against him?

* I personally think Petersen's attacking efficiency would be better exploited on the wing, against Lolesi. Lolesi isn't a great defender, and having Dykes put a grubber behind him, having Lolesi turn (he has the agility of a truck for that!) and having Muzza chase it down would be a great tactic IMHO

* Hopkins wasn't a reject - the Panthers were quite upset after we signed him

* Let's compare the wingers in the modern game:

Meli - puts on big hits in defence, but if he misses or they get an offload he's exposed

Blacklock - great attacker, mediocre defence

Lewis - fast and gpood, but sometimes his positional play is non-existent

Point is players are humans, and we all know that wingers are never the best defensive units anyway.

I expect some changes to the side by Saturday anyway. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone who has a blinder in the Prems side pop up on the bench in first grade either.

pb got it right. we don't know what has been happening, what smith plans and really, who will be in the team on saturday.

as for 'recycled' players we tried to rely on juniors for a long time, hence the period stretching from 1987 until approximately 1996. you need new players and if you can pick them up cheap, even better. every team does it and i would say that smith has a pretty good record in spotting players who can benefit our team.

i was one of the many who shook my head when we signed peterson but he plays with enthusiasm and always gives his best as well as a great try scoring record. i also shook my head when we signed jt and look where that got me. if are going to bag blokes for having a go there isn't much of a future for us.

lets face it, brian smith is paid big money to coach the side and i doubt he is keen to throw that money away by picking players he doesn't feel will perform for him.

*YAWN*

I'm not a big fan of the team either, but let me tell you the same old crap would have been roleld out had Smith named a side almost the same as last year....

"Oh, this is the same side as last year and we didn't even make the finals! Why play the same team again?"

Point is, everyone was so hyped about the changes being made to Parra this year, big, bulky, blah blah blah, but when thebacks get a bit of a shifting as well as the forwards everyone cries?

We'll do alright, don't worry about that.

Doesn't seem to matter what side BS picks, chumps like JTS are going to bag it. Can anyone on this forum honestly say that the side that ran-out for Penrith in Rd 1 last year was capable of winning the comp, because it didn't change that much throughout the season. And if you don't pick the side on trial form, why the hell have them in the first place. It's the same whinge people have about the City-Country concept.
