Former Canterbury Bulls coach Phil Prescott has confirmed he is keen on the now-vacant Kiwis rugby league coaching job and believes his credentials are as strong as other candidate.
Prescott the 2006 New Zealand A coach said last night he will "put my name in the hat" if the New Zealand Rugby League opens nominations after parting company with Leeds-bound Kiwis coach Brian McClennan yesterday.
The NZRL claimed McClennan resigned yesterday after signing his Leeds contract. But McClennan insisted in a live radio interview last night that had been "pushed" after the national body tried to change the clauses in his contract and make him report to new director of football Graham Lowe.
Whatever the semantics behind McClennan's move the reality is he has gone and the NZRL plans to uphold its rule that the Kiwis coach be New Zealand-based.
Prescott is confident he could take the step up.
"All I want is a hearing and if they feel I'm the best candidate then I'll get the job."
Chairman Andrew Chalmers said the NZRL would immediately begin its search for a replacement full-time coach who must live in New Zealand and fully involved in the domestic high-performance coaching and development structures. Junior Kiwis coach Paul Bergman has also stated he would put up his hand. McClennan's Kiwis assistant-coach Graeme Norton, Central Falcons and New Zealand Residents coach David Lomax, Waitakere Rangers boss and former New Zealand A coach Bernie Perenara and former Warriors head coach Tony Kemp, the NZRL high-performance director, may also be candidates.
