Former Canterbury Bulls coach Phil Prescott has confirmed he is keen on the now-vacant Kiwis rugby league coaching job and believes his credentials are as strong as other candidate.

Prescott – the 2006 New Zealand A coach – said last night he will "put my name in the hat" if the New Zealand Rugby League opens nominations after parting company with Leeds-bound Kiwis coach Brian McClennan yesterday.
The NZRL claimed McClennan resigned yesterday after signing his Leeds contract. But McClennan insisted in a live radio interview last night that had been "pushed" after the national body tried to change the clauses in his contract and make him report to new director of football Graham Lowe.
Whatever the semantics behind McClennan's move the reality is he has gone and the NZRL plans to uphold its rule that the Kiwis coach be New Zealand-based.
Prescott is confident he could take the step up.
"All I want is a hearing and if they feel I'm the best candidate then I'll get the job."
Chairman Andrew Chalmers said the NZRL would immediately begin its search for a replacement full-time coach who must live in New Zealand and fully involved in the domestic high-performance coaching and development structures. Junior Kiwis coach Paul Bergman has also stated he would put up his hand. McClennan's Kiwis assistant-coach Graeme Norton, Central Falcons and New Zealand Residents coach David Lomax, Waitakere Rangers boss and former New Zealand A coach Bernie Perenara and former Warriors head coach Tony Kemp, the NZRL high-performance director, may also be candidates.

I think it has to be Norton. He has been in the mix for a couple of years and the players respect him. If its someone else i feel that some players may make themselves unavailable

I'd be happy with Norton or Prescott, both are good IMO.

Can League fans vote for management...?

After the Orcas getting thrashed today, hopefully not Bergman. Knows how to talk himself up, his team of young guns (some of which they are), but unfortunately Bergman's "building for the future" line won't cut it especially when the Kiwis require wins at no expense particularly for the future.

I can't see any state of origin coach building for the future, so I don't know why we accept this excuse when we lose tests.

Yes, by lobbying the local club, district, province etc. Or a more direct approach by positioning yourselves in executive positions at those levels.

James Leulauai will get the nod is what I am hearing. Though apparently he has yet to apply, but if he does he has basically has the job.

My pick:Leulauai w/ Gary Kemble as his assistant.

Though it was thought Leulauai basically had the job last time, but he pulled out.
Its a very political process . .. . perhaps leulauai wasnt gutter enough to involve himself in scrambles.

Bergman obviously has some support but whether or not its from NZRL or from the Media. I'm picking the latter.

I dont think players would make themselves unavailable if the coach was James Leulauai. He has just as much mana as Norton if not more.

also now his son is playing well . . . he wont have to leave him out of the team.

Said in the paper that Norton has yet to apply, also the performance of the lions wont help his cause.

Bergman has the support of the bloke he went to University with.....Andrew Chalmers.

If "mini bus" gets the gig, I'm deadset off to lawn bowls....

I think there will be an exodus of loyal supporters if he gets the job. Anyone can teach a team one off the ruck plays.:sarcasm:

I'd like to see Gary Kemble get the gig. He was being groomed for the job before he fell out of favour with the powers that be.

McClennan was a "nuffie" a few years back too

Am happy for those blokes to get the same chance that Bluey got

Nah mate, the difference is, Brian was never a nuffie.....he pretty much always
enjoyed success.

Some of the names mentioned are simply laughable.

I meant Nuffie in the terms of a general punter that followed bugger all on the local scene, which i was at that stage.

And therein lies a huge problem for domestic league in this country....Warriors and other
NRL teams is where the "glamour" is. Most "fans" only want to be associated with that level of footy...most seem to forget that, without many levels of grass roots footy, the
elite stuff wouldn't happen. Coaches, managers, trainers, match officials etc just would
not be around, and I'm including Refs as well.

I'll warrant that 80 % of the crowd at Mt Smart on any given game day have never been to a Fox, Sharman, Phelan game or a Premier League game in their own provence.

Please don't take offence BH......not aimed at you, but I just needed to get that off my
chest :D
