Ipswich to take on Kumuls
THE Papua New Guinea Test side will aim to be the first team all year to stop Swifts 160kg gentle giant Stanley Fau from running riot.
A selection of the best Ipswich rugby league players, named the Ipswich Centennial XIII, will take on the PNG Kumuls in a trial match at the North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday night.
The PNG team are using Ipswich as their training base for a week as they prepare for a Four Nations campaign against Australia, England and New Zealand through October and November.
The Kumuls are littered with miniature-Hulks and are being forced to stand in the road of Fau, the surprisingly fleet-footed monster who dominated the IRL grand final.
That will provide good preparation for a team who are rank outsiders to win the Four Nations.
Newly instated PNG coach and former English Super League star Stanley Gene said his side was too proud of its heritage to be thrashed.
We're always underdogs but we are not here to make up the numbers and we want to prove people wrong, Gene said.
We have a lot of local league players in the team, but our main focus is on the 2013 World Cup and we need to increase the ability of the local players.
We'll surprise people.
Our country is celebrating its 35th anniversary of independence and we want to do our nation proud.
Twelve of the PNG players, half the squad, are from local PNG teams.
Cronulla hooker Paul Aiton is the only NRL player in the squad and he will captain the side.
But the Kumuls actually looked very impressive during their training run yesterday, completing their session with an impromptu traditional dance.
The PNG team basing their camp in Ipswich is a result of months of negotiations between the Ipswich Jets and PNG Rugby League Federation.
One of the Jets key sponsors is Sun Engineering which have several operations in PNG and wanted to establish a permanent link between PNG and Ipswich.
The Ipswich Centennial XIII will include four Ipswich Jets players, Callum Waldrum, Brendon Marshall, Ramon Filipine and Zac Lemberg.
Paul Lowe will coach the team which will unfortunately not include Swifts star Wes Conlon who had already committed to a North Queensland Aboriginal tournament.

Jets keen to sign PNG talent
THE Ipswich Jets hope to recruit two members of the Papua New Guinea Kumuls team currently training in Ipswich.
The Kumuls have set up camp in Ipswich to train for their Four Nations campaign.
Ipswich Jets chief executive Brad Wolens said he wanted to draft two to three members of the Kumuls into the Jets club for next season.
Ipswich rugby league clubs will also be scouting the Kumuls for potential players at Saturday night's trial match between Papua New Guinea and the Ipswich Centennial XIII.
Wolens said after watching the Kumuls train this week he was convinced some of their players could excel in the Queensland Cup.
I'll see how they go this Saturday against the Ipswich team but I think there's some great talent there, he said.
I would love to have a couple of guys stay on here and play for us next season.
One of our major sponsors is Sun Engineering and they are keen to promote Australia and Papua New Guinea relations.
The Kumuls' body shape is naturally so muscular and suited to rugby league and they don't even do proper weight training.
You can only imagine what they could become if you put them in a professional set-up.
The man who did the majority of organising to get the Papua New Guinea team to Ipswich, Sun Engineering director Mark McMonagle, backed the ability of the Kumuls players.
They would probably just need a lot more training than other players their age, McMonagle said.
I have watched these guys for a while now and I know they have the ability.
Ipswich Jets FOGS Cup player Desmond Mok is a member of the Kumuls squad, while former Jets Queensland Cup regular Trevor Exton also played for Papua New Guinea.
Ipswich Rugby League operations manager Brendan Rose said he had alerted the local clubs to the potential brilliance of some of the Kumuls squad after seeing them in an opposed session at North Ipswich Reserve.
Our clubs will definitely be interested in some of the players but there's obviously a balance. You have to be careful of between local players and imports, Rose said.
Yesterday the Kumuls visited several Ipswich primary schools to run rugby league clinics. Today they will hold a recovery session at Ipswich Grammar School.
