I recently salvaged some pretty great hardwood from an era gone by and thought I should make a couple of guitars. So i did. My first was for my 10 year old son. Its based on a telecaster, with a hum bucker in the bridge.

The second Im completing right now is for me and based on a 1958 Les Paul Jr..with P-90 pickup that growls.

Ive got the entire build threads over at The Chookpen forums but id thought Id spread the word here.

here are some snaps:

looks good. hows it sound?
The Telecaster has more sustain than my 96 Strat. A note rings for days.

The Junior has some really Jazzy cleans and the p-90 growls when you crank the overdrive on it. Deeper than Billie Joe Armstrong's sound. The only problem with it is weight - its a heavy little beast.

That first one is stunning. No slight on the darker one, just asthetically for me the first one is beautiful Good job!

Thanks CS. The first one is chambered, a semi hollow body and the face you see is a cap glued to the body from a 1920s Tiger Oak cabinet someone threw out. Hence the tiger "stripes".

Nice Melon, you build these puppies yourself? Impressive.

Im hoping my boys take to the guitar so we can jam and id love the day he gets his own guitar!

Simo, yep. Started learning to build them recently. Finishing a Bass at the moment and then starting a neck-through.

you know what ive always been interested in seeing and its probably a looks over funcionality thing but using a switch like youd have for a light switch and use that as a pickup selector switch instead of a toggle style switch

A spring loaded light switch would be interesting because you cant accidentally knock it out of position. It has that certain stiffness. It would be worth trying on something like a hofner which uses those different dip switches to phase in and out teh multiple pickup configs. Even brian May's Red Special has these dip switches. id like to see the Red Special with HPM light switches!! LOL.

Ive seen some dudes make themed guitars and one guy did a space invaders theme, where the inlays on the fretboard are alien invaders and the volume and tone dials look like joy sticks. He even installed a big red fire button as a kill switch.

Great stuff.

I am insanely jealous of people that can do things like this, I can barely change a car tyre.
