Some Stats

After 4 weeks, 2 wins and 2 losses I figured it'd be a good opportunity to have a look at some stats on the Forwards for the Tigers and the rest of the comp.

These stats only include the starting props, locks and second rowers. Pretty much, the big men who have to do the hard stuff.

Minutes played: The minutes played by our starting forwards as a team, is above the average for the NRL. Cronulla is at the top with 1235 Mins played, Tigers placed 8th, with 1172 and Newcastle is last with just 970. The difference between first and 8th is just 63 mins, but from 8th to Last is 202 mins, hence we are going quite well in this area.

Tackling: An area we need to work on. We rank 9th for tackles made, we rank first for most missed tackles and dead last for effective tackles percentage.
The Storm have missed 26 tackles out of 516 this season, the Tigers have missed 64 out of 546. The NRL average for a teams forwards pack is 43. We are 1 of just 2 teams with an effective tackle % under 90%, the other team is the Roosters. We are at 88.28%, Roosters 89.45%. First place is the Dragons with 95.22%. The NRL average is 91.90%

Penalties Conceeded: we are 5th in this area, with 10. Penrith and Parramatta are first with just 7, Newcastle and Cowboys are last both with 18. This is a sign that we are disciplined in the forwards and aren't inclined to give away too many stupid penalties in defence.

Line Breaks: We are equal last with Canberra, Souths and Warriors here with just 1. Titans and Roosters top the list with 6 each.

Hit Ups: We are 5th in this area, so the forwards are doing a failry good job, they aren't shying away from doing plenty of work. Titans are at the top with 272 Hit ups, we have 236. Warrirors are last with just 160. The average is 217.

Metres Gained: We rank at 6th in this area with 1875 metres gained in 4 games, from 236 Hit ups and 3 dummy half runs, averaging 7.85 metres per run, which is equal 5th for the comp so far. Roosters are averaging 8.64 at the top and the Warriors are last with 7.29. The Roosters, Bulldogs and Penrith are the only teams averaging over 8 metres per run.

Handling Errors: We are equal first in this area with Titans, Brisbane, Cowboys and Canberra with just 9 errors in 4 games. Bulldogs are last with 19. Ball control seems to be very good and disciplined as well.

Off-Loads: Tigers are equal 7th in this area with 18 off loads. Bulldogs are top with 28, Canberra and Melbourne are last with just 5, The NRL average after 4 games for all teams is 16. So again, we're sitting just above the average. Our off-loads can be deemed more effective when paired with the fact handling errors are low and metres gained are reasonably high as well.

Overall, I think the stats may surprise a few people. The forwards are playing quite well in attack. Defensively though there is a worry. Because most of our backs are quite poor defenders, we need the forwards to fill the breach and step up. Unfortunately though, the stats paint a picture which shows that they aren't doing as well as they need to. If we can improve our tackling effectiveness, we may see ourselves performing a hell of a lot better, and the backs will have some more energy to be more effective in attack.

Stats like that can be manipulated though. WRT yardage .. on what tackles were the big metres made .. did we get a quick play the ball .. was it against a sideline so we had a tough next tackle etc etc. The defence ones aren't surprising ... we don't seem to stick at first contact. Did anyone see bellamy's board lst week .. in big writing `1st contact'. I'd love him ... i lost count at 37 fuchs in 2 minutes before the game in my lipreading count and look how they came out and played ... coach shines would have been in with our lot before penriff saying `we'd like to win .. they have to win .. out u go'

I agree, but these stats can tell an awful lot about workload our forwards are putting in when compared with the rest of the comp.

I think some of the stats are quite a bit better than most would believe. Credit where it's due moth, our pack in most areas, is keeping up with bigger more dominant packs in attack.

Shocked about:

- Line breaks - usually we are at the top of this list

- Handling errors - It seemed like we made more than 9 against the Panthers.

Seems like we are doing Ok otherwise.

This is for starting forwards only (not hookers, backs halves or reserves)
