People forget how many 'SL' things we currently have in the NRL. ARL didn't have every game televised. No video refs. Perth & Adelaide had u19's and reserve grade. If NRL copied this format would we still be waiting for a VIC born and bred NRL player?

For all it's problems SL had some good points it's just the way they went about it that was the problem.

Sop if Perth and Adelaide were still in, we'd have more Vic born players.........how the f*ck does that work????????

No but if the NRL went the 3 grades policy as SL did chances are in the 10 years the Storm have been in the comp at least 1 player from victoria would of played 1st grade.

Adelaide had Kidwell, Jensen, Williamson Joel Reddy play in their u17's or u19's

Perth had Matt Petersen and John Wilshere. but since then. Lee TeMaari, jon Green, Daniel Holdsworth, the Goodwin Brothers. Have all made their debuts through Perth.

This has to be due to the fact that in their 3 years in the comp Perth had 3 grades every year.

Nothing since

Well they have one now. Who said you can't be noticed through the NSW Cup?

Victoria has a NSW cup team?

He does have a point, when the Reds were set up they put a big emphasis on development of WA players for the future. Unfortunatley we never got chance to see it come to full potential but I have read a couple of things from management of the club at the time that reckon they would have had a reasonable number of WA players in the 1st team within a few seasons.

The way the Storm have done it obviously hasn't worked in terms of developing Vic players, the proof of that is obvious to see.

They can but As they play under the Central Coast Banner. They don't play in the same state most times. Compare that with the SL days when All 10 teams had 17's, 19's and Reserve grade before 1st grade.

You have 30+ Players from Adelaide/Perth playing in front of the main game! Way easier to be noticed

Reddy only went because his dad coached there for a year. The Goodwin boys, likewise, followed Dad from RL territory.

I think the point is with reserve grade sides in the state we would see more players from new territotires beign developed. I'm sure the U20's will be a kick start for Vic players to come through and the Reds moving up into the NSW cup next year will also give a career path for WA players (we have some 15-17 year olds in teh Reds jnr squad that look very good and hopefully they will be in the Reds NSW cup squad in a year or three and then be noticed for the NRL). Adelaide need some development and direction plan for where and how they will develop players.

Point is the SL strucutre for new teams would have worked alot better than the current one we have had before the u20's ame along.

i dont disagree with what you said, just your choice of player as an example of local talent.

I understand the players I mentioned weren't locals but there was some in the teams. I just mentioned the players that came the teams and played 1st grade. I just liked that structure

The ARL expanded the competition to 20 teams in 1995, across in just as many states as we have now... doesn't sound like an organsation that was hamstrung by anyone.

And when was the Super League announcement made?

Errrmm, in 1995.

They were going to kick off the Super League in 1996 and the courts prevented them from doing so until 1997.

You don't think that there was a correlation between opening the game up to include other states by the ARL and what was happening off the field with the ARL's power base being threatened by News Limited.

Or do you honestly see the World strictly in black and white terms. ARL GOOD - SUPER LEAGUE BAD

4 legs good anyone?

SL was annoucned in late 1994. How could there possibly be a correlation, did the ARL pull 4 teams out of their arse in the offseason between 94 and 95?

 I don't think that's what he was implying. The ARL indicated expansion in the early 90's and undertook that in 1995. April 1 1995 was when SL was announced but it was certainly in the works for months before that, probably late 1994, and would've been a product of the ARL's planned expansion. SL wanted to seize the lucrative deals in terms of TV money that could be earned through having so many teams on per week.

Well then what would have happened if the ARL had allowed FOX to broadcast ARL matches for a hefty sum rather than give the rights (FOR FREE) to Kerry Packer?

The following would have occured.
Wests would have died
Balmain would have died
Norths well I'll just say this "Stupid bloody drought"
Souths Thanks to all the loyal supporters for not showing up
St.George Risked everything by staying at Kograh in the state the place was in

Gold Coast Chargers would have fallen over
South QLD Crushers would have gone to the wall.

Does anyone think of it this way?

Things have turned out relatively positive for Rugby League - it's still going and has only truly lost two areas - Perth & Gosford, since SL - and even then it's striving to get those areas back.

Very good point in-goal. No doubt we'll have some dopes assuming they know what would've happened without SL but IMO, you've hit the nail on the head.

Had Pox actually woken up and BID for the rights, SL war would have never happened.

Poxtel and News Ltd in that period was like the bloke at Harvey Norman asleep while the Plasma TV half price sale was on, and when he woke up, they were all gone, so he had to go and steal one.
