Sonny Bill set to make millions for NRL clubs

As I said, we will likely see an increase of 8-10k at home this year just based on 3 x almost guaranteed 40k+ attendances. You'd have to think the return games against the dogs and souffs would break the 40k mark as well (hell I'd expect over 50K if both teams are travelling well for the dogs game) so I would not be surprised if we were to average 20k home and away this year.

The total increase may end up "only" being 4000 or 5000, but either way there is going to be a massive increase no matter how much you may hate SBW

I didn't think Mundine had that many friends!

What's with the 25% membership increase claim? According to the membership thread they have a 3% increase, a whopping 358 extra members!

lol Jeezus talk about drawing a very long bow

The novelty factor will wear off by rd 3 or 4 and any crowd increase will normalise. Saying that an extra 6K punters will go to Roosters games just because he is playing is laughable.

It's not about how much I hate the merkin. Those crowds would have probably been close to 40k regardless, round 1 and Anzac day are huge games irrespective of whether or not the mercenary is playing. I dare say your crowd average would have been a few thousand higher last year aswell if both of those games were home games for you

The article claims crowds for all Roosters games (home and away) will be higher because of one man, all I'm saying is, that's rubbish. Your crowd average will be higher because you've got two huge games you didn't have last year

You're delusional if you think SBW has played no part in anticipation for the big crowds in Rounds 1, 2 & 6. After that we have no real data to go off as to what the crowds will be.

6000 per match... yeah, it's a long bow alright... but you're all acting a bit precious thinking he won't have a significant, measurable bottom-line effect on the competition this year. There will definitely be additional bums on seats to watch him play. Quantifying it is difficult at this stage, I would imagine they're simply extrapolating a lot from the season launch metrics - which a few have mentioned won't be sustained.

He's worth money and exposure, he is a superstar and a freak player. You can't take that away from him just because he's an arsehat. The excitement is somewhat justified.

6000 a game seems like a conservative estimate to me.

The roosters averaged 12,000 at our games last year. We have 3 x likely 40,000 games this season (Souffs, Dogs, ANZAC day). This means that we'd have to average around 10,500 to each of our other 9 home games to bring about an increase of 6000 to our average attendances. Much more likely to be an 8000 or even 9000 increase in average attendances IMO.

But lets stick with the 6000 increase. At $35 per GA ticket that would net us over $2.5 million just in extra ticket sales for the year. No idea what our deal is like with the SFS so can't say what percentage of that we get, but whatever way you slice it there will be a massive financial windfall for the club in 2013 far surpassing whatever salary we are paying SBW.

To be fair you should probably compare to 2011 average when you last hosted both ANZAC and souffs opener

A fair point.

We averaged 14k that year, so we'd need to average 20k at home this year. With 3 x 40k crowds we'd give that a fair shake.

A big crowd at Eden Park will raise their away attendance this year, so will the away games vs souths and doggies about 40,000 each i'm guessing so I think the writer of the article may get away with it if he says on average. Could possibly draw more to the souths game if Mini & Crocker announce their retirements this year.

This story brought to you by Khoder Nasser Management Agency.

Just how much was Ritchie and/or the DT paid for this ad?

They haven't been paid directly for this story to be written. Pretty sure that's not how it works. They write the story first and wait for all of us to read it, discuss it, link it, email, and generally give it life. Then they will take the circulation figures (and all the other data) for this issue featuring $BW to the advertisers saying "look at how many people read the DT on Monday compared to those other papers and look at how many people linked it and discussed it online spreading your advertising message further and further....". And then the advertisers will say "wow, you're right, heaps of people read it compared to the other papers and then they continued discussing it online for days/weeks in various forums" and they will pay them for more advertisements next week or next month. The same way it works every week or month.

You, me, and everyone else knows that if you attach $BW's head or name to something then people look at it. They might not like it, but they will look. And then they will tell others. I hadn't read this article until I saw it linked on this website and read your post. Nice work, you got the DT a reader, Ritchie a bit more ammo to write a similar piece next week, and generally added weight to the theory that $BW will drag people into the game. In your effort to drag this story down you only succeeded in proving the author right.

The NRL doesn't pay for stories to be written about it. They spend their money trying to make sure people in the game don't get written about LOL.

Just on Ritchie. He is a full time sports journo working for Sydney's most popular newspaper which just happens to thrive on sports stories. Thousands of people consume his work every day. He'd be getting an easy $200k+ a year. Not Paul Kent money but he'd be going ok.

East Sydney Roosters V South Sydney Rabbitohs will draw a big crowd. Should be 40,000 plus but this should be expected. Both clubs are deemed to be on the verge of great seasons so it does make sense.

I just hope both clubs wear their most popular playing strips! They are on show!

I am sick of clubs deciding to don outfits that do not reflect their colours and what most fans expect!

The Roosters should run out with their navy blue strip with the red&white V and the Rabbits should wear what they wore in the Charity Shield(green&red horizontal stripe jumper with no side panel)

These marketing people that the clubs are employing do not understand the flow on effect of familiar recognisable playing strips to future supporters and current fans.

Heres hoping.

East Sydney?

Yes! Thats what I will refer to them as!
I believe that this should be their name and as a long time fan will call them that regardless!

I hope one day that Roosters management will wake up to naming this club with the history of East included in its name and the locality name of Sydney to give an idea of where they come from! Sydney alone is just too vague and is not representative of their locality.

East Sydney Roosters is more appropriate than just Sydney Roosters.

The fact that souffs were successful last year, playing at what should be their home ground and the good vibes and expectation of a new era in league would boost the first round crowd more than BSW.
