Sonny Bill Williams is set to re-sign with Sydney Roosters after advising the New Zealand Rugby Union he would not be returning to the Chiefs next season.

Williams met Chiefs coach Dave Rennie, technical director Wayne Smith and NZRU general manager Neil Sorenson in Sydney on Thursday but has turned down their three year offer as he wants to stay with the Roosters.

A new NRL deal is expected to be finalised before he heads to England with the New Zealand World Cup squad next week.

Williams starred in the Roosters' 26-18 win over Manly in last weekend's grand final and won the club's player of the year award during the week.

The NZRU immediately announced the decision on their twitter account.
"Disappointing but we put our best foot forward, & in the end @SonnyBWilliams made his decision,” Sorensen said.

Would be a major coup for rugby league if he re-signs especially after everyone thought it was a foregone conclusion that he was going back

And especially after he's completed the major goal of winning another premiership.

Big coup and fantastic for the game if true.

Breaking news: SBW says no to All Blacks and Chiefs in 2014.

allblacks.com 11.Oct.2013

Sonny Bill Williams has informed New Zealand Rugby and the Chiefs he will not be returning to rugby in New Zealand next year.

New Zealand Rugby General Manager Professional Rugby Neil Sorensen said while disappointed not to have secured Williams for 2014, it was no secret the 28-year-old Auckland-born player had options for his playing career next year.

"We obviously worked pretty hard to bring Sonny home, and we have had some really good conversations with him. This is disappointing but we know we put our best foot forward, and in the end Sonny has made his decision," Sorensen said.

"As we do with many players who leave New Zealand, we will continue to keep the lines of communication open with him about his playing career."

Chiefs Head Coach Dave Rennie said: "While we are disappointed that Sonny won't be with us in 2014 now, we’ll be keen to keep talking to him about future options."

It is understood that Williams has informed the Roosters he will return to them for the 2014 season.

Love him or hate him he's a superstar and he generates headlines and generates interest in the game.

It would be hilarious if he signed with a different NRL club.

Maybe if he signs with the Raiders or Warriors we won't have to put up with the Channel 9 'SBWOMG Show', or at least Raiders/Warriors would get more 9 games.

Part of me really wishes that he gives himself another test bu moving to another NRL club, as highly unlikely as it is.

Same, I think he'd do wonders at a club like the warriors. There's a lot of discussion about how much of a positive influence he was on all the Polynesian boys at the roosters, they saw the way he trains, the way he prepares himself and all the extras he does, the warriors need someone like that IMO
