As much as I hate Diehard and he hates me....we agree 100% on this issue it seems.

Every so ofter you see this crap starting up about South Africa.

Sometimes it takes the form of a web site, other times its a press release....but there is always a new comp starting "Soon".

The fact is, the game in South Africa doesnt exist. Im more then willing to chnage my tune if someone can provide results or pictures of the game being played in the last 12 months.....but thats not going to happen.

When ever a World Cup is mentioned in Rugby League, you can be sure South Africa will apear out of no where. A bunch of crap union players, a few Aussies.....but the fact remains the game isnt played in South Africa and all of this talk about a possible comp over there is a load of ****.

South Africa don't deserve a place in the World Cup, as far as I'm concerned it is a mickey mouse team.

South Africa have to do a lot more if they are to convince the international community of their existance. Especially after so many false dawns and wild goose chases in international rugby league.

If there is proper rugby league in South Africa, I will be suprised and happy. But give us some evidence. A three year old website and a few press releases wont cut it.

I want regular results, pictures, videos, touring teams and people from the ARL going to South Africa and investigating the rugby league set up.

It is at least something that Der Kaiser says he has a player who says he has actually played in South African rugby league.

I think there is a big future for rugby league in South Africa, especially if we can get the black population to play.

TOOK WALES OVER 100 YEARS TO FINALY GET A DOMESTIC COMP GOING (EBB VALE,CARDIF ETC) also Ireland ,Scotland only in the last ten years have made big moves.
Since RU has gone pro its opened loads of doors.
All or most of SA development has been behind the closd doors of RU which has been quite big (ok very big) in the country, give them time and it will happen.

If we could ever develope South Africa along with a ressurected France, we'd have five top rugby league nations.

I have also heard from the Chariman of the SARL of late and can let you know that not only has he assured me that the game is being played and was played over the last few years, but he also has great plans for the sport in SAF and unlike the previous administators there he actually has a propsed time line in which to achieve these goals. I have also seen a newspaper article from SAF with Dave and former league legend Tom van Vollenhoven which states the ambitions of the game in SAF for 2005 and beyond.

Like all developing nations though, the SARL need the support of the international community and teams from England, Australia etc. to go and tour there to provide more exposure to the players and teams. It wqont happen overnight, but give SAF a few years and I think we will all be pleasantly surprised with where they go.

There just appears to be very limited info at all out there on the web. I've searched high and low and didn't come up with much. The most interesting thing was that the South African Sports Commission appears to have a liaison officer for rugby league. I've sent her an email. I'll post some of what she has to say if she replies.

Also had an email from SA.
Hey you think how long its taken Wales and Ireland to get going,,,,all of a sudden it seems like they have been playing for years.
Lets not judge SA on past results and encourage them.

Too true,

Better of suppporting rather than denigrating. One time the game will take off and then we amy see another team rpovide serious competition internationally. Better playing a little bit rather than not at all as well.

South Africa is a diamond in the rough waiting to be found in my opinion whoever is in charge of the game there should really be trying to promote the game to the large black majority since Rugby Union is still viewed very much as a "upper class white sport" and with just recently the Eastern Cape franchise which was going to be a predominantly black orginization with black players, administartion and coaching staff being knocked back for the Super 14 this is more painfully clear then ever.

Can you imagine a Bryan Habana or Breyton Pulse running around in League?

What does the international rl do for south africa except hold irregular world cups if this was any other sport aussie teams would be visiting and helping to estabilish the game,so what if they are going to have a team for the 2008wc they deserve there chance along with other emerging nations this is why the wc is important, last wc they got a crowd of 8,000 for a qualifer and the smh reported that there where going to be more matches in sa,u fellas dont even want them to get any matches, where would rl in png, wles, ireland, france etc be if they wernt given any matches probably in exactly the same state as the sarl.

   The head of SARL, government liaison officer for the sport, Der Kaisers buddy who has played there, West-tigers touring team..... I don't think they're all coordinating a RL playing scam...

It's all a grand scheme....A truly Machiavellian scheme  .

Most of my family lives in South Africa. I'll see what I can dig up.

Well...thats great.

Seen as we have now got contact with the people running the game in RSA....amybe they can send us a link to their web site.

They could send a few resent pictures, maybe a draw....maybe a list of teams......maybe even a few reports from news papers......something.....some proof other then "Yeah, Im here.....what....no money....ok I dont need to talk to you then."

ague Freak makes good points. It is good to investigate, to ask South Africans and find out more about what there is and how to help rugby league in South Africa grow. Rugby league in South Africa will not be helped by blind optimism to the present situation. There is plenty of evidence of rugby league in Wales and Ireland. A few newspaper reports from South Africa would not hurt, surely?
