Wow, you must be the resident Rhodes scholar on LU.

So tell me this Professor, why bother with any type of marketing at the Football Club level, when all you need to do is win games. The rest will take care of itself right? Someone pass this thread onto Waldron, it is all good.

I'll highlight the part of the statement you seem to be most incapable of understanding

For all the flashy clothes or toys they have, the thing that affects your bottom line the most is the ability to put bums on seats and get your games shown on FTA.
Are you incapable of reading sentences in their entirety? The MOST does not explicitly imply EVERYTHING.

Do you disagree with the statement that if you do not perform on the field, you will eventually start to struggle financially off it? Which team has been the most successful over the last 20 years? The broncos, ironically they are the most financially stable club in the competition, all this with probably one of the least attractive jerseys in the competition.

I never said that all the merchandising means nothing, your inability to read the post correctly has led you to that conclusion. For the record, I think Souths, well last year were doing very well in the marketing department, but that's not helping them get good crowds, good timeslots on tellie or good publicity this year is it? Football is a performance based business, if you do not perform on the field, the rest of your business suffers. That is the reality, if that upsets you, support a winning team.

Which most of them will be doing next year after they jump ship.

The best marketing you can do is perform on the field. For all the flashy clothes or toys they have, the thing that affects your bottom line the most is the ability to put bums on seats and get your games shown on FTA.

Something that can only be achieved by having strong performances on the field. Something that they are clearly not doing and the dwindling crowd numbers are evidence of that.

winning form comes and goes

getting people watching the club despite the wins is the key to long term survival.

if their crowds are this good with 1 win, what will they be like with a winning team

thats what marketing is about

Something they've clearly failed in this year if that is your view on marketing.

Performance puts bums on seats, your die-hards will goto all your games irrespective, your fair weather fans is where the money is to be made in merchandise and ticket sales.

All the advertising you like will marginally improve your bottom line, but performance on the field is what holds the key to having a profitable club, that profit also helps sustain the performance of the team.

Personally I think marketing for souths failed terribly this year. Holmes a Court was talking up the clubs hopes way too much, the book of fueds is just another terrible blunder. It's made Souths despised by your casual fan, put pressure on the side needlessly and facilitated the media to jump on souths hate bandwagon.

As for their crowds "being this good" are you talking about their last 4 home games where it has been floating between 12,000 and 8,000 people in attendance? Their crowds have been in steady decline since the start of the season, correlating directly with the performance on the field.

Once fans realised it's going to be another long season, the fair-weather fans dropped off, and small crowds have resulted. Carrying this form into next year, you can expect those crowds to continue to dwindle unless there is a change in results.

Nothing affects a clubs bottom line, more than performance on the field. It is the reason Souths needed to be bailed out by PHaC and Crowe in the first place.
