Souths Cares Reward Indigenous Youths

Twenty children from the Woombarra Wunggan Youth Service Program in Taree were rewarded for their achievements with a visit to Rabbitohs training at Redfern Oval on Monday January 19.

Woombarra Wunggan Youth Service, a non-profit organisation, supports the needs of disadvantaged Aboriginal adolescents in the Greater Taree local government area. The current range of programs provided by Woombarra Wunggan include access to sport and recreational activities, crime prevention programs, a drop in centre, arts based community activities, alternative education programs and general health, safety and learning support to individuals.

As part of Souths Cares support for the program, the students and staff were hosted by Souths Cares Indigenous Programs Co-ordinator David Peachey at training and watched the Rabbitohs players get put through their paces before having the chance to meet the team, take a tour of the gym and dressing rooms, and hear from Souths’ indigenous players.

Nathan Merritt, Beau Champion, Rhys Wesser, Nathan Merritt and David Peachey spoke to the students about setting goals, the importance of education and making smart decisions which were said to be invaluable to the group.

Program co-ordinator Graeme Kellner commented: “Thanks a lot to Souths Cares for today. The kids really got a lot out of it and can’t stop talking about it! Definitely a great reward for their achievements.”

lol, its his stunt double. While there is one on the feild with a bandaged up hand in training, the real one is pumping iron in the gym....shhhhhhhh!

Great intiative by Souths Cares. Good to see one club really putting in the hard yards to help out communities.
