Souths forwards to 'inflict some pain'

South Sydney captain Roy Asotasi has compared the monster new Rabbitohs pack to the premiership-winning Bulldogs forwards of 2004, and believes it can inflict the same sort of pain.

Asotasi was a key member of the big-hitting Dogs of War, who included Willie Mason in his prime, Mark O'Meley and Sonny Bill Williams.

He says the Rabbitohs' recruitment of 115kg Dave Taylor from Brisbane, 110kg Ben Ross from Cronulla and gun Englishman Sam Burgess to join the likes of himself, Michael Crocker and Luke Stuart will have opponents dreading a clash with Souths.

"Every team hated to play (the Bulldogs) because they knew that we played the up-and-in defence, get in your face aggression," Asotasi told reporters at today's launch of the annual Charity Shield clash with St George Illawarra.

"So they knew when they played the Bulldogs it was going to be one tough day at the office.

"We're hoping that we can do that this year, that we're able to turn out there and from the kickoff just inflict some pain and just to let people know we're here to pay football and we're not going to back down."

Asotasi said Souths' 2010 engine room lost nothing in comparison to the 2004 Bulldogs.

"I think it's up there," he said.

"Both packs were about the same size, the same skill level, we've just got to be able to produce it.

"In 2004 when we had that pack we got to the grand final and we won it and we've got to do something similar to that in 2010.

"If we can achieve that then we'll probably be the same as, or maybe even better than, what we had in 2004.

"That's one of the things Russell Crowe wanted to bring to South Sydney was size and we definitely have that in Taylor, Rossy and Burgess.

"It's probably made me have to get a big bigger and heavier to try and match these guys in the scrum because I probably look like a hooker compared to (them)."

The 28-year-old skipper said defence was the key area needing attention from the Rabbitohs, who missed the finals in 2008 and last year after a breakthrough 2007.

"It all came down to just letting too many people gain too many easy yards," he said.

"I think we had no line speed at all last year, maybe even the year before, and one of the biggest thing's (new coach) Johnny (Lang's) brought in is we've just got to get off our line."

But Asotasi said Lang had also unshackled a Rabbitohs attack that sometimes struggled under sacked boss Jason Taylor.

"That's the kind of style he's bringing to the table, I think that's one of the things the boys enjoy the most ... he doesn't restrict you from anything," the skipper said.

"If you feel there's (a situation) where your favourite play will work, he kind of goes with it."

Asotasi is aiming to make return in the February 27 traditional clash with the Dragons after a five-month rehabilitation from a knee injury.

The Rabbitohs also have Crocker recovering from off-field surgery, but are hopeful linchpin John Sutton will have overcome a neck problem which required a minor operation in time for the Charity Shield.

Massive forwards = All systems go.

This will be an awesome year.

We are Souths and we are either going to make this game respectable again or die trying.

Fug I love this club.

Those players aren't even in the same class as the forwards we have this season.

Also Muir played for Souths in 2002 not 1999

My mistake it was that other Unit mcNicholas I was thinking of. Just making the point that big isnt always great

Well in 1999 we had no problems with our forward pack what so ever.

They had a good season and was a big driving force in our wins.
They gave us a lot of go forward.

Souths were on track to make the finals that season, until a bogus 7 week suspension to Trindall who was one of the form half backs in the comp that year.
He was dominating.

So not sure what your point is meant to be about.

My point is that pinning all hopes on a big forward pack is ridiculous. Even taking Roys quote of comparing to the bulldogs. Look at the Dogs backline that year. Patten, elmasri, tonga,Utai, anasta sherwin. Then the bench Maitua, SBW and thurston quality all over the park not just in the forwards. To elaborate with the 10 meter rule big Having 3 or 4 big forwards become a target laterally in defence

No one is pinning all their hopes on big forwards though.

I agree with Roy, our forward pack line up is up there with the Dogs one of 2004

Our bench looks pretty strong to.

I'm more than comfortable with out backline and halves for 2010.

Our pack has a lot of mobility. Every forward has a different skill set.

I think there will be some teams dreading to go up against us.

Of course but this is no ordinary pack of big forwards.

You do realise how many of them are internationals?

Bulldogs 2004

8.Omeley
9.Perry
10.Price
11.Mason
12.Ryan
13.Grimaldi

14.Asotasi
15.Matuia
16.Hughes
17.SBW

Rabbitohs 2010

8.Stuart
9.Luke
10.Asotasi
11.Lowe
12.Taylor
13.Burgess

14.Pettybourne
15.Ross
16.Crocker
17.Clark/Geddes

Looking at the Bulldogs, Asotasi wasn't as good in 2004 as he is now.

SBW had to play games in the centres because he kept breaking down and Burgess has being playing in the forward pack at the same age and there was no need to hide him out in the centres. He has played at prop and second row.

Asotasi was a better player then then now. his passing game is non existent and his ability to break the line is gone. To say SBW had to play in the centres is a non point he played in the centres because he was a dam good 1.

Im sorry but nearly ever forward that plays and is a Kiwi is a international . Burgess is a talent but the amount of internationals is a mute point

You're talking rubbish if you saying Asotasi was better in 04 than 09

SBW only played in the centres because he kept getting injured when he was in the forward pack.
His body couldn't hack it.

I dont want to sound like some unfaithful cheap s**t who needs to be headbutted and run over by a cement mixer to regain my virginity, but I am afraid that I have to agree with league nut about Roy. He was better in 2004 than last year. Of course he was injured last year, so there is an excuse.

But Slammin is better than Ellis, thats understood and Ellis is quite frankly, gold.

Morley at his peak was on another level alltogether. At his peak, hed be in my top 5 players of all time. Some people Ive met would put him as number 1. One of these is an ex player. High praise indeed.
