Well little Easts person,Ciggies are heading for a ban and booze will be banned off TV in a few more years, you have an anti pokie senator in Federal Parliament, how long before he start to offer deals on legislation,if the Federal Govt places curbs on the Pokies.
Trust me they have the power,I cant understand why the clubs are so reliant on the bloody things anyway, they should be about building members ect,and getting away from the machines, cause no matter which party is in when they need money where will they look gambling and taxes on it .

Ban this ban that

Excuse me, but only morons need a govt to tell them what to do and how to do it. Quit dragging our freedoms into the gutter, just because you dont like something. I'm so sick of being told what to do and how to live my life by utter nothings like you (and especially the Health Nazis, the AMA).

If you wish to live in a fascist or communist county, then please do so and move the f**k out of Australia.

I don't like pokies, in fact they sh*t me to tears. I hate what they do to some people and their families. They've buggered up pubs and destroyed them as band venues as well. That said, I don't believe in banning them just because they adversely effect a minority as grog and ciggies do.
It gets mentioned a lot but if a good portion of the taxes they generate are genuinely put into social welfare and counciling then that's a good thing then, isn't it?

It's not the pokies, it's the people who use them. We live in a free society and like any gambling poker machines send some people broke but who's fault is that. If the do gooders want to ban pokies they might as well ban horse racing, card games, two-up, tiddly winks, in fact anything that you can bet on. As I said earlier when are people going to take the blame for their own actions instead of pointing to a brainless machine!

It certainly is a shame, because just like there are those that like to go and have a flutter on the pokies, there are also some that don't like them at all. People would have had a choice to go to a club of its size without machines.

Maybe it was naive by HaC, but his intentions where not bad on this issue.

People where on here saying that it would be difficult to get it across the line, and I guess they have been proven right.

Anyone can go to any club and choose not to use the pokies. They can take advantage of the cheap food and entertainment.

The statistics are based on the population.

It would be poor and flawed research to give a percentage of the gambling population. It is too subjective. Who is determined to be considered a gambler? It would be basically the opinion of the researcher or the subject. I.e. one person could only gamble once, and not count themselves as a gambler, whilst they still have gambled!

It is important to note that problem gambling is defined as any gambling that directly affects the life of the person. So in otherwords it could be $10 and still be considered to be a problem.

Is $10 spent at mcdonalds considered problem eating?

Guess who will be the first to complain when Clubs have to lift their food and beverage prices because pokies were banned...

Of course, those that don't have the urge to play don't have to, but for some it is depressing watching others that clearly look like they can afford to feed the machines.

I am no wowser, and have no issue with either playing them or watching others do so, but you can understand the argument.

I think people are missing his point. $10 spent on gambling is only considered problem gambling if your budget means that $10 is vital for your mortgage/rent/food.

The $10 comment is reltive to your finances.

You have to wonder if this decision is based on PHaC not running the show anymore. He was obviously the driver thinking outside the square. Can see with Richardson steering the ship Souths will be heading back down the normal road for them.

Simple fix is a $100 withdrawal limited from any atm within 500 metres of a gaming venue.

About people not wanting to see others playing pokies because they can't afford to do the same? No I can't. When I play pokies I spend no more than $5. If watching me do that makes some people depressed then they should stay home or go somewhere else.
