Souths set to sack struggling Rhys Wesser

SOUTHS fullback Rhys Wesser will pay the price for a horror show against the Bulldogs, with the veteran set to be axed today for Friday's crunch game with Parramatta.

Wesser missed a high ball, two crucial tackles that led to tries and was sin-binned for the final 10 minutes in one of the most forgettable afternoons of his 205 game career.

And while the 31-year-old yesterday vowed to bounce back against the Eels, The Daily Telegraph has learned John Lang will dump the veteran for flying winger Nathan Merritt.

The revelation came after Wesser yesterday admitted he let Souths side down.

"Yeah, I want to repay the boys," Wesser said after a recovery session. "I let down the boys. I let down the team and it's something that I regret, so I'm looking forward to Friday night. We need to get a win."

Wesser admits his 70th minute sin-binning for holding down Bulldogs winger Steve Turner in a tackle cost the side any hope of victory.

However, the veteran fullback felt a penalty should have been sufficient.

"Ten minutes - I guess that was a bit extreme I think, but then again I'm not the ref," he said. "But it was a hard to take, walking off. They scored straight away.

"Me not being there was a big difference ... just not being able to direct the defence to where the attackers are."

After losing their opening two games from winning positions, Wesser insists the Rabbitohs are close to clicking, but the side must cut out the lapses in concentration.

And he admits the task doesn't get any easier against an Eels side smarting from last Friday's 20-6 loss to Penrith.

"It's going to be a tough game," Wesser said.

I think Josh Mansour has to come in on the wing with Merritt at fullback, this should have happened from Game 1.

depends when some of forwards are ready
i.e. Clarke , Sam and perhaps Peats . Would allow
Mcqueen to wing. By end of year would like to think young Roberts will be ready to push for a wing spot.

Good call. He has to be accountable. If he really wants to make it back into the side he will.

bunniesman will be happy to do that..
Unfortunetley we don't have the capspace to afford me.

Back on topic, it's sad but the right call. It's tough to blame an entire loss on one player but this is the right move. I'd love for either Mansour or Roberts to come in on Merritt's wing. Both are capable of being special players.

Roberts is too young and small I reckon. Give him a full year in Toyota Cup before you bring him into 1st grade. It is a bloody big jump for a young kid.

I reckon McQueen should go on the wing, however I would like to see Mansour there.

Farrells not a winger, we need a specialist winger to replace Merritt. How bout Kane Morgan? He played well in the Charity shield.

Possibly, I couldn't give the game my full attention, we had this pest latch on to us and chew our ears off watch the game. U weren't in Adelaide that weekend were you?

Well looks like we won't be dropping Wesser. Lang has taken a gamble with the 17 he's announced, if they come up short again he'll be under plenty of pressure.

It's hard to remain positive when we play like we did on Sunday & nothing get's done about it.
I think we can do better however the team for the Parra game has been announced so that's the end of that.
