Coach Arthur Kitinas
how does south sydney beat the storm ?
caretaker coach arthur kitinas is thrown to the slaughter house that is the souths head coaching position pitted against a well coached melbourne team that will be missing 3 key players in slater, geyer and smith which will hopefully work in our favour.
the best attacking team in the competition works on dominating the play the ball area with quick play the balls the likes of smith and orford take advantage of and this will be our first priority that being slowing it right down within the rules. with smith out, much of the focus should be on orford, but with bellamy one of the up and coming thinking man's coach's in the nrl, he may use orford on one side of the field and exploit the blind with hill.
orford though will get more touches on the ball than anyone on the field and souths will need to simply hit him pass or run keeping it all above board of course. orford despite his size is as strong a player running around and any half hearted grabs will be punished but the little number 7.
outside orford is the ball playing scott hill who has brilliant slight of hand and he will more than likely play the opposite side to orford in attack which could cause real headaches if both are on for the lacklustre game.
each one of the souths forwards will be need to be up and in the face or a very good melbourne pack containing former internationals kearns, kearney and howe with emerging guys like reynoldson who get better each week.
if we can slow the play the ball down, meet the attack on the ad line we will be half way in upsetting the storm.
in attack, we keep it simple. get back to basics, hit it up the middle early with the little men chiming in, kick for position then reinterate the need for a good kick chase to pin the storm in their own half. i would also target steve bell in defence who can make bad reads coming out of the line.
if we are inside our own half kicking for position, i would be instructing craige to put the ball over the sideline and slow this game right down hoping this unsettles melbourne who play a flowing style of game. it may be a negative style, but with not much in attack to work with, we need to bring back to our pace and not try to keep up with melbourne. easier said than done, but with players missing, and our defence is similar to round 1 v the roosters, who knows ?
i will be at the game as per usual with the boyz, scott geedes make a welcomed return to the nrl in number 18 as well which is long awaited.
