Coach – Arthur Kitinas

how does south sydney beat the storm ?

caretaker coach arthur kitinas is thrown to the slaughter house that is the souths head coaching position pitted against a well coached melbourne team that will be missing 3 key players in slater, geyer and smith which will hopefully work in our favour.

the best attacking team in the competition works on dominating the play the ball area with quick play the balls the likes of smith and orford take advantage of and this will be our first priority that being slowing it right down within the rules. with smith out, much of the focus should be on orford, but with bellamy one of the up and coming thinking man's coach's in the nrl, he may use orford on one side of the field and exploit the blind with hill.

orford though will get more touches on the ball than anyone on the field and souths will need to simply hit him pass or run keeping it all above board of course. orford despite his size is as strong a player running around and any half hearted grabs will be punished but the little number 7.

outside orford is the ball playing scott hill who has brilliant slight of hand and he will more than likely play the opposite side to orford in attack which could cause real headaches if both are on for the lacklustre game.

each one of the souths forwards will be need to be up and in the face or a very good melbourne pack containing former internationals kearns, kearney and howe with emerging guys like reynoldson who get better each week.

if we can slow the play the ball down, meet the attack on the ad line we will be half way in upsetting the storm.

in attack, we keep it simple. get back to basics, hit it up the middle early with the little men chiming in, kick for position then reinterate the need for a good kick chase to pin the storm in their own half. i would also target steve bell in defence who can make bad reads coming out of the line.

if we are inside our own half kicking for position, i would be instructing craige to put the ball over the sideline and slow this game right down hoping this unsettles melbourne who play a flowing style of game. it may be a negative style, but with not much in attack to work with, we need to bring back to our pace and not try to keep up with melbourne. easier said than done, but with players missing, and our defence is similar to round 1 v the roosters, who knows ?

i will be at the game as per usual with the boyz, scott geedes make a welcomed return to the nrl in number 18 as well which is long awaited.

what a game to miss !! our first damn win in 10 games and i miss it which is damn disappointing.

what a great effort and a boost for the souths loyal who have been toughing it out for what seems an eternity. look forward to seeing the bandwagoners hop on again similar to the opening to the season or the know it all fans who may just proclaim joe williams as the next great number 7 for souths.....you guys are the one's who keep souths loyalists laughing or the fans of other teams who take pity on the souths team and tip them for an upset each week and now will party on finally getting one up.....good luck to you all.

rlw style ratings

1. Brad Watts - 8
- apart from the chan try, was very good. defused two good bombs, backed up all night and helped forwards when they tired.
2. Wes Tillott - 7
- a double for young tillot and come with a play you won't hear much about that could of turned this game round, the intercept that defused a certain try for the storm in the 1st half.
3. Lee Hookey - 7
- was a handful for melbourne, defended well as well. always looks good with the halves on top as most good centres.
4. Shane Marteene - 6
- very quiet, missed bell that led to the cooper try that nearly stole the match for melbourne.
5. Luke MacDougall - 7
- queit first half, then made impact like usual in 2nd. scored a good try, made metres, and pulled of a brilliant cover tackle that defused a try late in the 2nd.
6. Owen Craigie - 7
- the nugget played a good support role to young williams, put doubt in the minds of melbourne, set up 2nd try for us and set up first tillot try with a good kick close.
7. Joe Williams - 8
- the star, kicked 4 from 6, had a hand in all our tries barring the craige kick for tillot, his kicking game was awesome long and short, the key before souths blow their load is too see how he goes week in week out.
8. Luke Stuart - 7
- all day, all night, kept coming. solid effort from stuart.
9. Shane Walker - 7
- best game in a while for walker, ran the ball well and gave great service to williams and craige.
10. Glenn Hall - 5
- was not notices which is a concern. possibly injured, but should see premiere league soon with geedes and the big fella stringer coming back.
11. Shane Rigon - 6
- played well in spurts, adds value to the pack but is more an ideal bench player.
12. Mark Minichiello - 7
- inspirational at times, brain explosions as well. i love watching this guy each week, was a little untidy, but the provided some key plays that provided the spark.
13. Ashley Harrison - 7
- was here, there and everywhere, overplayed his hand on a couple of occasions, scored a nice try and is quietly getting it done with little recognition down here since leaving the broncos.

14. Brett Kearney - 5
- 20 mins is not enough time for this guy.
15. David Thompson - 6
- played well, could inherit hall's starting jersey.
16. Willie Manu - 7
- was a handful ech time he ran the ball and was impact from the bench which is why he gets 7 from me, defended well, a genuine impact player.
17. David Fa’alogo - 6
- was looking good when on the field, scored a try running wide off craiger, i would like to see him with more minutes on the field.

the game

what a great start from the rabbitohs, made good early metres and then with a brilliant kick chase pinned them in their own in goal with a great tackle from captain ash harrison. then it went wrong for 20 mins where we piggy backed melbourne and gave them all the posession which saw them take an early 16-0 led.

melbourne prop alex chan was good for the storm but the first try he scored where he capitalised on a defensive lapse then embarassed watts with a step who made his only blemish not taking the man with the ball.

this then led to a soft kidwell try where he scooted from dummy half to take melbourne to 12-0 who were scoring at a point a minute. signs were not good. after souths again helped melbourne down field with poor dicipline in the ruck, centre bell scored after 'mad pup' mcdougall fumbled a difficult bounce which fell to bell which was the end of melbourne's dominance early.

enter joe williams who was the pick for souths and got a points decision over the man of the moment matt orford.

our first try came when williams went to the line holding up the ball drawing hill then putting ash harrison in the hole to score. williams converts and we trail 16-6.

the second try sees williams standing wide with craige at the scrum. williams again with the jink takes on the melbourne line, busts them and is pulled 3m short of the storm line. that sets up momentum for souths which see's craige put fa’alogo over for the 4 pointer with williams again converting. melb now lead 16-12.

danny williams is caught for a highshot in which we take the shot at goal in which williams misses but should of converted. this ends the scoring chances in the half.

the second half starts well for us again, a much more diciplined start see's us dominate posession. the man they call joe is at it again and he puts 'mad pup' through the hole to score and see us take the lead 16-18.

mad pup mcdougall whilst quiet in the first half was more involved in the second half and again showed why we at souths love having the guy on one side of the field. he followed the try up with a nice take from an orford cross kick which saw him then scoot 30m down field starting another souths roll.

williams kicks on the fourth tackle which sees turner field the kick and minichello puts him over touch which livens the souths team. with williams peppering the melbourne line with a brilliant short kicking game, we see repeat sets of six and victory is seemingly ours.

that all changed when steve bell busts marteene and beats mad pup to put an out of sorts cooper away and the storm now lead 20-18. 20 mins to go. this also sees the introduction of young brett kearney who in my opinion should of been used in both halves in spurts which was the only question i had of uncle arthur i am now told he is affectionately known.

watts makes a nice bust and turner makes a brilliant tackle to save what would of been a try. this sees souths get in the red zone again with craige putting in a kick for tillot who scores after being given benefit of the doubt from the video ref which is the right call.

then the try of the season !!!!!

hookey on the spread makes a half break and then turns it inside for the rampaging manu who was tough to handle all night for melbourne, he gives it to the little number 7 joe williams who makes a brilliant around the corner pass to tillot who seals the match ! the words do it no justice, watch the news to see what i am talking about.

the last 6 mins were a blur, melbourne did score again with chan and nearly stole the match but for a forward pass from mcdougall for melbourne.

an emotional win and one that puts a tear to the eye after the bs we have endured !!

we looked good all night going from the left side of the field to the right with good service from walker to williams who in turn was dominant all night except the purple patch that melbourne enjoyed in the first 15mins.

3 wins this season, we now need to build on this and hope we get the likes of stringer / geedes back in first grade in the coming weeks in a tough 3 week stretch away from home.

well done to all involved and unclue arthur who got his first win from his first attempt.....emotional fans will say sign him for 3 years lol, richardson will see sense keeping the guy involved in some way hopefully getting a heavyweight coach in and signed soon.

yeah im a dragons fan but souths r definately 2nd on my list. great to c u boys get a win
viva la bam how did u giv the ratings without watchin the game?
anyway great effort by ur mob, dug deep 16 down fairly early down to a team thats been losing most games in the last 2 and a half years, coach just got sacked it was inspiring for them to come back.
already the appointment of katinas has payed dividends as the boys looked a lot more proffesional and sharp out there and look like real goers on the field
u guys need to sign joe williams long term keep him there groom him for the numba 7, and keep craigie at 6. i agree with kearney he needs more than 20 min but i like him as an impact player outta dummy half.
these are key points i think yous need to consider for the success of the rabbits:

1 sign joe williams and keep craige as the halves combo.
2 sign fletcher
3 keep hall as starting prop, hes been one of your best
4 look to maybe next year just buy a cuple of strike players, guys like j monagham, tahu, they need a real good outside back in terms of a real penetrative centre or very pacey winger. look for ur backs to improve ten fold over the next month with williams and craigie utilizing guys like hookey tillot mcdougall andmarteene
5 next year add adam macdougall to the mix and u guys r looking pretty good

congrats 4 the win boys

i can't believe i have to answer this, but for the technology behind members, foxtel actually airs all games on fox sports 1 or 2. the replay was at 9:20PM.....this is how i watched the game.

i thought that would remain obvious from the way i saw the match.

Congratulations to the Rabbits, that was a great comeback win.I`m particularly pleased for Joe Williams as i`ve been a long time fan of his footballing talent and I can assure all you Souths fans that he will go from strength to strength now he has the confidence to know he can produce the goods in the top grade!
I`m sincerely hoping the bunnies can now kick on and win their fair share of games except the return match with the Tigers!!!
As far as next year goes I reckon that you need a good quality 5/8 to keep Owens mind on the job or displace him if he doesn`t perform. From the glimpses I have seen of him, young Rhys Hanbury might be ready to fit the bill with Braith hopefully returning a year later. As for the backs you really do need a quality fullback and centre to partner Lee Hookey. For a fullback who wouldn`t cost a lot i`d recommend Trent Clayton currently at the Panthers. He`s big, strong, lightning quick and a try scoring machine! He could also play on the wing if Mad Dog plays fullback.Damon Alley-Tovio is a must to resign. This kid has representive potential and has to soon be a regular in the top side.A good hooker another prop IF Paul Stringer doesn`t resign are the last requirements to putting the bunnies back on the map!
