Sports Performer of the Year Awards nominees announced
World athletics championship gold medallists Steve Hooker and Dani Samuels are among the dozen nominations for the main category in The Sydney Morning Herald Sports Performer of the Year Awards, presented by Colonial First State.
The awards, nominations for which were announced today, include a prize of $50,000 for the main award. They are voted on by the public, who face a mammoth task in making a pick from a group of worthy contenders.
Hooker added to his Olympic gold medal in the pole vault by winning the title at the World Championships in Berlin, despite tearing his abductor muscle a week before the event and risking breaking down with each jump he attempted.
Samuels, at 21, built on her ninth at the Olympics a year earlier by becoming the youngest world champion in the discus when she hurled 65.44 metres in Berlin.
The other nominations for the major award include the 2007 winner, cyclist Cadel Evans, as well as Craig Alexander (Ironman triathlon), Victor Darchinyan (boxing), Stephanie Gilmore (surfing), Jarryd Hayne (rugby league), Mitchell Johnson (cricket), Emma Moffatt (triathlon), Jess Schipper (swimming) and Mark Webber (formula one).
The other four awards - Team Performance of the Year, Coach Performance of the Year, Young Performer of the Year and Performer of the Year with a Disability - have also produced hot fields of nominess.
This year's AFL and NRL champions are well represented, with the Geelong Cats and Melbourne Storm nominated in the team section and Mark Thompson and Craig Bellamy in the coach section.
Voting opens online at 9am tomorrow, and the winners will be announced at a black-tie dinner at Star City on November 25.
