Down $50 :(

And it all started so well with Prince of Arran but then couldn't even get a place bet up lol

Thoughts on the Cup?

I know it's often a crap shoot but historically it's where I've had my luck...

I've narrowed my picks down to Best Solution, Magic Circle and Cross Counter.

Ruling out Best Solution it’s a 2400m horse ditto CliffsofMoher

Magic Circle and Ebor form is a big no from me.

Yucatan, Muntahaa, Marmelo (stocking firm after last years butcher job nice one Bowman!), Cross Counter and Prince of Arran are the ones I’ll be playing around

Some merkin tipped me Muntahaa months ago so I suppose I have to throw it in.

I’m more excited about who will will the first at Doomben on Tues TBPH.

My shortlist is

Sound Check
Youngstar
All each way, with a saver on Ventura Storm place only.
Last few races after it always tend to bring up something interesting...

If Avilius wins I'll almost give it up, barely got 2500m let alone 3200m, I'll be leaving it out of everything probably.

Youngstar, possibly but I have distance concerns on that horse.

I normally have two rules for the cup, never back a horse who has had a run in the cup and didn't win and never back a horse who hasn't had a run before the big race.

I have broken the rule twice, Fiorente he did run second and was flying and Rekindling last season just because I liked his profile. But the Cup is changing and I think this year again I will have to break my golden rules which have served me pretty well over the years. I don't think we have seen the cup winner yet and if we have it should be renamed the Melbourne Plod.

I know a few big punters who don’t touch the Cup because they think it’s poison. In a punting sense (if you are actually trying to make money) then they are pretty spot on.

It’s hard enough as it is with the millions of formlines that come in to the race, then you can do all the facts and figures and end up changing your mind on the day because the rail is off or it’s a rock hard track etc

Every year something bobs up and runs a bottler at 40-1 and lands in the First4 and then you think how did I miss that?

But thats why I love the race, you can usually go through the field and make decent case for 17-18 horses then it’s pretty much a guessing game when doing process of elimination on the remaining horses.

As Hiney said there are usually a few rules which help eliminate horses and over a long period of time they proved correct however we have seen that start to change over the last 5 or so years.

One thing I have learnt is not to worry about doing the form early on, it just confuses things and gives you time to change your mind.. I’ll have a quick look at the field today but will sit down tomorrow night and bring out the dart board and do my form.
