I know a few big punters who don’t touch the Cup because they think it’s poison. In a punting sense (if you are actually trying to make money) then they are pretty spot on.
It’s hard enough as it is with the millions of formlines that come in to the race, then you can do all the facts and figures and end up changing your mind on the day because the rail is off or it’s a rock hard track etc
Every year something bobs up and runs a bottler at 40-1 and lands in the First4 and then you think how did I miss that?
But thats why I love the race, you can usually go through the field and make decent case for 17-18 horses then it’s pretty much a guessing game when doing process of elimination on the remaining horses.
As Hiney said there are usually a few rules which help eliminate horses and over a long period of time they proved correct however we have seen that start to change over the last 5 or so years.
One thing I have learnt is not to worry about doing the form early on, it just confuses things and gives you time to change your mind.. I’ll have a quick look at the field today but will sit down tomorrow night and bring out the dart board and do my form.
