SHARKS NAME STRONG SQUAD FOR FINAL TRIAL

The Sharks have named their strongest available squad for the trial match against teams from Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Wingham for Saturday nights game in Port Macquarie.

The match will be played at the Regional Sports Stadium with
a kick-off time of 7pm. The Sharks will play three 35-minute periods, one against each of the three teams.

David Peachey, Brett Kimmorley, Danny Nutley, Andrew Lomu and Nathan Merritt will among the Sharks stars who will play significant game time according to the coaching staff.

“They’ll all get plenty of football. I expect most guys to play at least half the trial, probably more like about 50-60 minutes,” Sharks football manager Greg Pierce said. “They’re all fit enough, it’s more about working on their combinations, timing and those sorts of aspects of their play.”

Internationals Phil Bailey and Jason Stevens have recovered
from injury and will both start the game for the Sharks in what will
be their first games for 2004. Bailey has been named as a centre
partner for Ryan McGoldrick, the position he occupied for Australia
in the first two Test matches against Great Britain on the recent Ashes
Tour.

With the return to the paddock of Bailey and Stevens, only Nigel Vagana
remains on the injured list with the season proper a little over two weeks
away. His recovery from shoulder surgery is going according to plan with
a return to the playing field anticipated in either round one or two of the
premiership.

The Sharks v Port trial will be the final hit out for the Sharks before their
season opener on March 13 against the Wests Tigers, meaning this match
will represent the final opportunity for players to force their way into the first 17
for the round one clash. The Sharks v Tigers match will be the first match of the
NRL double header to be played at Telstra Stadium, kicking off at 5.30pm.

Don't read too much into it. Daniel Dumas didn't even make the 25 man squad but he's been named in the starting 17 here.

nah

Franze played last week when Mcgoldrick didn't. Prob giving them both a go. Bailey in the centres is so he won't have to do much and just get a decent run around.

The 25 man squad, for most practical purposes, are the players who have their salaries included under the NRL's $3.25 million salary cap. Anyone who misses the cut will have theirs included in a second tier $250 000 cap for lower graders.

A lot of clubs train with squad sizes other than 25 but still submit a 25 man 'squad' to the NRL for the purposes of the salary cap. I know the Bulldogs only have a training squad of 24 this year, for example.

Its all about the Salary cap. Your top 25 are the ones who's pay packets make up the $3.25m.

Baily will be back in the second row as per SR's comments.

current international Phil Bailey (foot), who will shift from the centres to second-row this season, make their returns from injury this weekend in a trial at Port Macquarie.

While we are asking questions here. Does the club list their full compliment of players contracted to the club?
