Squad for trial game

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will get their first taste of footy for season 2008 this weekend, when they travel to Ipswich to take on the Gold Coast Titans in the first of three pre-season trials.

The Green Machine will use the trial as a stepping stone for the season, with 15 of their squad traveling north of the border to take on the Titans. This will give the Raiders coaching staff a solid indication of where they see the side heading in the next few weeks, with further trials scheduled against other Queensland based outfits the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys.

Raiders assistant Coach David Furner will be in charge of the team heading to Ipswich, with the 14 Raiders squad members set to meet up with the remaining eight Souths Logan based players on Friday.

Furner said although the trial will not be full NRL strength, it will still benefit the players who had limited on-field time in 2007.

“I think for us its about getting some early preparation, there’s some guys there that haven’t played for a while, Adrian Purtell comes to mind who’s was out for most of last year with DVT, and he’d be looking forward to having a few games before the season begins.”

Furner added that it was important for some of the Raiders forwards to show where they are at in terms of fitness, and it was the perfect opportunity to see them in action along with some of the Queensland based players.

“Some of our forward will be pressing for selection for our first round game against the Knights, and guys like Michael Weyman, Marshall Chalk and Ryan Hinchcliffe will be all keen to put themselves in the frame,” Furner said. “We’re using eight Souths Logan players and it gives us an opportunity to see where they’re at, because some of those players could come in contention for first grade at some stage during the year.”

I think those two will shape up for our third trial.

Should be a good hitout - hopefully no injuries.

We cant expect much from this game , 1st game and also the young guys getting a run, is Henry going to attend , I thought he might be interested seeing herbert and other fringe FGers having a go. Hope we dont pick up any injuries but thats a risk in any game.
If this bloody rain stops I might head out there , Id like to see Joel Thompson in action.
How strong is the Titans squad?

Not very strong...mainly all QLD cup players with NO regular first graders

Found the Titans team to play us , gonna be no real guide , worried that we may pick up injuries for no real gain , especially to weyman , Dobbo , Costigan or Campo.

So why the f**k ae we going there !!
Exactly. Seems to be out of some sort of sympathy for the Ipswich club more than anything. I don't mind Purts and the younger fellas having a hitout, but it seems to be a bit of a bullsh*t exercise.

We answered the call of a desperate titans team who needed opposition to play when penrith pulled out of the schedualed trial, my understanding is canberra did not expect to be playing a QLD cup side, they expected some FG titans members there to test the sqauds

the titans took us for a ride, but unlike penrith, we have intergrity and stand by our word, so we're playing the trial anyways

Not going to be much of a game. The Titans are fielding only Under 20 players.

A f**king joke - I know :x

I think we have some of the best youngster's in the game and some of the guys should be blooded against first grade competition, though Cartwright has errored here in not trialling some of the first graders. I can see the reasoning, I don't however support this move.

Personally I find myself questioning my club more and more after season one (as expected) ... this was added to the list.
