Shane Flanagan is yesterday's coach. The team is fit and full of effort, but the guy doesnt have a tactical brain cell in his head, and hes backed up by a defence coach with even less of a clue in Senior Assistant Coach Dean Young.
He is still playing 2016 footy in 2026. That very dour hard worker style play, giving away some penalties and doing tough yards with conservative play just doesn't work anymore. It will keep you in games, but there is a reason they keep losing close games.
Flanagan, Hasler and Madeg are all very similar to me, the game has largely passed them by. Madge just has the cattle atm but the cracks are already showing.
In round 2 last year the Flange called out Illias, in the media, for not being able to close out a game.If Atkinson fails as a game manager in the first eight rounds but has better stats in all other areas (defence etc) than Kyle will Flanno Sr be willing to drop Flanno Jr?

After yesterday the question needs to be asked, is it the team, or the coaching, who don't know how to bring in these tactics?
I'm sure Anasta is not far off asking how long before Atko gets the same treatment that his boy got.
Flanju's terrible miss on Preston ended up costing them the game. The aftermath of the ref's, and decisions, is masking that up spectacularly. While Flanno Jnr just keeps on being Flanno Jnr and getting no blame from the coach. Flanno Jnr puts in effort, but honestly that's just not enough for him to be starting. They really need to roll the dice on someone else.

Fair, total misread? Is it a miss if you don't even bother to make an attempt?

Making a song and dance about it in round 1 is not good for business either. He is just deflecting blame for a crap gameplan that just never looked like winning the game. It's good enough to keep you in one though.

Wouldn't you think that Cook (Aus NSW and rep), Gutho (NSW rep), Holmes (QLD and Aus rep) would know what to do?As the senior half Flanju should by now know where he needs to be on tackle four to get the time and angle needed to pin the opposition deep. He's still terrible at icing a set.

People say that there is no difference between 6 and 7 these days, but in the inner club land there is.
Number 7 is the "quaterback" so to speak.
They wear that number as they are the ones directing the plays.
The Dargons couldn't do it last year with all the same players except Atko, and yet they all know how to do it.
I ask how much emphasis is on it at their training.
.
Nepo boy wasn't kicking the ball yesterday. Thank the Gods. Atkinson did most of them and was very good at it.
When Nepo boy had to kick a couple of balls at the end of a set it brought back horrible memories from last season. He's the worst kicker of a ball I've ever seen.
