Shane Flanagan is yesterday's coach. The team is fit and full of effort, but the guy doesnt have a tactical brain cell in his head, and hes backed up by a defence coach with even less of a clue in Senior Assistant Coach Dean Young.

He is still playing 2016 footy in 2026. That very dour hard worker style play, giving away some penalties and doing tough yards with conservative play just doesn't work anymore. It will keep you in games, but there is a reason they keep losing close games.

If Atkinson fails as a game manager in the first eight rounds but has better stats in all other areas (defence etc) than Kyle will Flanno Sr be willing to drop Flanno Jr?

Flanagan, Hasler and Madeg are all very similar to me, the game has largely passed them by. Madge just has the cattle atm but the cracks are already showing.

CC coaches a similar game just with more emphasis on discipline. But it would be nice if they could throw caution to the wind at times and play a bit of head up footy.

In round 2 last year the Flange called out Illias, in the media, for not being able to close out a game.
After yesterday the question needs to be asked, is it the team, or the coaching, who don't know how to bring in these tactics?
I'm sure Anasta is not far off asking how long before Atko gets the same treatment that his boy got.

While Flanno Jnr just keeps on being Flanno Jnr and getting no blame from the coach. Flanno Jnr puts in effort, but honestly that's just not enough for him to be starting. They really need to roll the dice on someone else.

Flanju's terrible miss on Preston ended up costing them the game. The aftermath of the ref's, and decisions, is masking that up spectacularly.

He is just deflecting blame for a crap gameplan that just never looked like winning the game. It's good enough to keep you in one though.
Making a song and dance about it in round 1 is not good for business either.
The really good teams do it tactfully, ie: in the lead up to the finals race.
Doing it in round 1 means that if you do it again less notice gets taken, and a 3rd time basically typecasts you into a whinging club.
I do agree with you on their game plan. Flanno is playing Flannoball.
Flannoball does not win the games it did in 2016.

Burton is f**king useless as a half except for one aspect.

He gets himself in a good position to kick deep even on poor yardage sets.

As the senior half Flanju should by now know where he needs to be on tackle four to get the time and angle needed to pin the opposition deep. He's still terrible at icing a set.

Wouldn't you think that Cook (Aus NSW and rep), Gutho (NSW rep), Holmes (QLD and Aus rep) would know what to do?
People say that there is no difference between 6 and 7 these days, but in the inner club land there is.
Number 7 is the "quaterback" so to speak.
They wear that number as they are the ones directing the plays.
The Dargons couldn't do it last year with all the same players except Atko, and yet they all know how to do it.
I ask how much emphasis is on it at their training.

Flanju was brought through as a seven. Flanno Sr is unwilling to give him the jersey to help deflect criticism.

PENRITH's entire streak was built on nailing tackles four and five. Even the reserve grade back ups in SOS and Cogger were able to execute (Schneider less so).

I thought Flanju was harshly treated early on by NRL clubs but a half decade later he really doesn't seem capable of steering a team at all

Nepo boy wasn't kicking the ball yesterday. Thank the Gods. Atkinson did most of them and was very good at it.

When Nepo boy had to kick a couple of balls at the end of a set it brought back horrible memories from last season. He's the worst kicker of a ball I've ever seen.

The more perplexing matter about Kyle Flannagan is the public pronouncements by other Dragons officials that he was viewed as being the ideal "no. 14" for the squad (i.e. a utility player off the bench) and that is what he was signed for.

If that is accurate, then why after what, 2-3 seasons is he still persisted with in the halves? Fact is he has negligible game management skills or ball playing creativity that is expected from a starting caliber halfback or five eight. The Sharks didn't try and keep him when he was signed by the Roosters. The Roosters? Heck, my team punted him after one season. That should have sent out a lot of flares to other clubs about his ability as a starting halfback.
