St George Illawarra v Parramatta, NRL Fourth Qualifying Final (1 v 8)

September 10, 2009 Foxsports.com.au brings you everything you need to know - and a few things you don't - about Sunday's fourth qualifying final between St George Illawarra and Parramatta.
WHAT, WHERE & WHEN:
Fourth qualifying final, WIN Jubilee Stadium, Sunday, 4pm (EST)

FORM GUIDE (past five matches):
WLLLW (Dragons); WWWWL (Eels)

THE NEXT STEP:
Winners:
A week's rest for St George Illawarra, or Parramatta will live to fight another day.

Losers: The Dragons will have to regroup in week two. The Eels' fairy tale will be over.

TALE OF THE TAPE:
That St George Illawarra enter this game as strong favourites is quite remarkable given their puttering finish to the season and Parramatta's rapid rise. Whether last week's trouncing was the loss the Eels had to have remains to be seen, but the restoration of the Dragons' confidence is of greater concern for Parramatta. The minor premiers have the advantage of Wayne Bennett at the helm, a man who has featured in finals football for almost as long as Jarryd Hayne has been born. Parramatta improved in each and every one of their seven successive wins leading up to round 26, but recapturing that form against the best defensive team in the competition will not be an easy task. They'll have to overturn an aggregate that has seen the Dragons outscore them 99-22 in their previous three meetings. The return of backrower Nathan Hindmarsh from injury is a boost for the visitors. He is the glue of the Parramatta defence, and his presence will have Eels fans optimistic about replicating the Warriors' efforts of 2008 in knocking off minor premiers Melbourne Storm. But the Dragons now hold the psychological edge and their decision to retain this fixture at WIN Jubilee Oval will only add to their resolve.

KEY MEN:
Ben Creagh (Dragons):
Built like a train, Creagh runs just as straight and hard. His backrow battle with Eels stalwart Nathan Hindmarsh will be critical.

Daniel Mortimer (Eels):
Mortimer has played second-fiddle to Jarryd Hayne, but his role is no less important. The Eels' chances hinge firmly on his ability to adapt quickly to finals football.

IS STAT RIGHT?
Last year marked the first time since the introduction of the McIntyre System, in 1999, that the eighth-placed team had beaten the first-placed team. St George Illawarra are happy in Kogarah, having won five of their six matches at WIN Jubilee Oval this season, while Parramatta have won only 11 of their 42 matches at the venue. The Eels last won at the stadium in 1997.

MATCH ODDS:
St George Illawarra $1.50, Parramatta $2.50 (TAB Sportsbet; 10/9)

LAURIE DALEY SAYS:
"It will be interesting to see whether the Dragons can replicate their performance from Friday night, given that they were pretty well ready to go for that one. They were fired up, having lost three games in a row, and I think they were preparing like it was a grand final. Having said that, they could be left a bit flat emotionally from that win. I still think they will get away with a victory against Parramatta, but I don’t think it’ll be by as big a scoreline as Friday. Parramatta have got a lot to prove, and their confidence would have been dented. The Eels are certainly capable, especially with Jarryd Hayne's special run of form. You’d never right Parramatta off, but I think the Dragons might have mentally scarred them after that victory last week."

PREDICTION:
Dragons by 14 points

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS v PARRAMATTA EELS
Sunday 13th September, 4.00pm
WIN Jubilee Oval
Referees: Jared Maxwell, Matt Cecchin

HEAD TO HEAD
Eels 10 wins , Dragons 8 wins, 1 draw

This season: Dragons won 22-8 (Rnd 5), Dragons won 37-0 (Rnd 26)

FORM GUIDE
Dragons: LWWWWLWWLWWWLWBWWWBWWWLLLW
Eels: LWWLLLLWBLDLWLBWLLWWWWWWL

Parramatta’s run as the NRL’s form team came to a dramatic halt last week when the Dragons handed them a hefty 37-0 defeat.

Now the Eels face the challenge of pulling off a major turnaround against a St George Illawarra side that was at its clinical best last week.

Yet the visitors are not without hope. Veterans Nathan Hindmarsh and Eric Grothe both return from injury this week – and Hindmarsh’s workrate in particular was something the Eels missed against the all-conquering Dragons pack last week.

Parramatta will also know they have plenty of improvement in them, while the Dragons will simply look to produce more of the same – rock-solid defence, a good completion rate, a strong long-kicking game and big metres from their forwards up the middle.

St George Illawarra have won the last three clashes between these teams and are undefeated against the Eels at Kogarah. They’ll start clear favourites here.

KEY MATCH UPS
Ben Creagh v Nathan Hindmarsh

Creagh has been a revelation for the Dragons this season, proving a handful for defences with a terrific running game down the left and an eye for an offload.

He has scored eight tries this year – more than any forward in the NRL except Anthony Watmough (who also has eight).

Creagh crashed over for a try and made a line-break against the Eels last week, and will be a danger man on the Dragons’ left edge once again on Sunday.

Hindmarsh is rarely as explosive as Creagh but remains one of the hardest working players in the game. The veteran back-rower will add plenty of grit to the Eels’ defence and will happily tackle all day.

And an improved defence is crucial for Parramatta – if they can keep the likes of Creagh quiet, then the visitors have the ability to score plenty of points through Jarryd Hayne, Daniel Mortimer, Feleti Mateo an co.

PUNTERS GUIDE
Head to head:
Dragons $1.50; Eels $2.50
Only a brave man (or an Eels fan) could back the visitors with much confidence here after last week’s one-sided result between these sides.

But this one should be much closer, and any team with Jarryd Hayne in it cannot be written off these days.

With both sides at full strength this should be a terrific battle, but we can see Wayne Bennett’s no-nonsense gameplan – and a vocal home crowd – getting the Dragons over the line here.

St George Illawarra to win by 6.

I hope it is stinking hot, it will help our moblie fit forwards. They have a pretty big pack and they may tire. But we have to go back to what won us 7 games in a row, playing footy and backing ourselves.

Thats what I'm hoping for, if the temp goes up a bit I don't think there forwards will be as dominate as last week, we may have the advantage in that aspect.

Preview: Dragons v Eels

Scott Brooks, Sportal

VENUE & TIME: WIN Jubilee Oval, Sunday September 13, 4.00pm (AEST).
COVERAGE: Channel 9
LAST TIME: Dragons 37 – Eels 0 at WIN Jubilee Oval, Round 26, 2009.
WALKING WOUNDED: The Dragons remain unchanged and injury-free for this return bout, while the Eels have been boosted by the returns of Nathan Hindmarsh (toe) and Eric Grothe (virus). Centre Krisnan Inu left the field early last week with a hamstring complaint, but is expected to play.
FORM: The Dragons ensured their worrying losing streak of three matches extended no further last Friday night when they took the previously red-hot Eels to the cleaners 37-0. Right from the on-set the Dragons defence set its sights on targeting certain Eels players and that plan worked a treat. They also completed 38 of 43 sets compared to the Eels' 20 of 37. Wayne Bennett traditionally thrashes his team on the training paddock for a period leading up to the finals and it came as no coincidence that his troops were flat on the field during this time. He trained them just once in the lead-up to last Friday night's win and the results speak for themselves. This club is now primed for September/October like never before. The Eels went into the clash searching for an eighth successive win, but they were never in hunt. The fact they had already qualified for the finals after two months of virtual sudden death footy probably played a role in the below-par showing.
WHO'S HOT: It's rare for a winger to take a man-of-the-match award, but Brett Morris achieved the feat last Friday night courtesy of a hat-trick of tries, just as many line-breaks and 183m in attack for the Dragons. Morris's final four-pointer in the 73rd minute was enough to send the 2009 NRL top try-scorers' gong his way. Eels full-back Jarryd Hayne capped off a memorable year by securing the coveted Dally M medal on Tuesday night.
WE THINK: The Dragons have played the Eels twice in 2009 for a cumulative score of 59-8 in favour of the joint-venture club. There is little doubt the return of Hindmarsh will help plug up some glaring defensive holes for the Eels in this game, but the confidence gained by the Dragons in Round 26 will prove priceless as they strive to bury Parramatta for the second-successive week. A similar game plan of targeting specific Eels players, combined with a steady completion rate, should do the trick. The Eels have not tasted victory at 'Kogarah' since 1994 and that poor record is not about to change in front of another parochial pro-Dragons' crowd on Sunday. Dragons by 13.

If the Eels throw it around they'll do us.

30 degrees, chasing second phases out wide scares me.
