RUMOUR OF SAINTS/CRONULLA MERGER

It was reported on 2GB and the Sunday Footy Show that St George Illawarra and the Sharks are having secret talks about merging. It goes without saying that if true it is 100% totally unacceptable and a disgrace. The Dragon Army will revolt and have the heads of the board. I have accepted the St George Illawarra merger but this is something I could never live with.Following is the thoughts of one Saint, Adrian Wright, on our egroup. While we may not agree with everything he says, the sentiment he expresses would be shared by many tired St George fans. And the rumoured merge would be a travesty for our brothers from the Illawarra also as the Sharks represent everything about League we all hate (Super League, the hopeless ground, the dirt supporters, blue on the jersey etc).
If we were to consider a merger with Cronulla, these are my terms:
- The club to be named the St.George Dragons and to be a
continuation of the St.George that existed before 1967 with the coming together of the St.George, Sutherland and Illawarra areas. The jersey will remain the Red Vee and the badge could change to the old pre 1978 St.George badge or the badge we wore between 1978 and 1998 (perhaps St.George should point to the right as he was intended to do.
- Marketing wise, the club could capitalise on the euphoric feeling toward maintaining tradition that will take over the Rugby League world with Souths returning to the fold. The return of the two most successful Australian Rugby League clubs. The old South Sydney and St.George rivalry will reignite instantly and Souths would once again become our most hated team.
- Games should be split with 7 games a year at the Sydney Cricket
Ground (in keeping with the memory of the great St.George sides of the pre 1967 era) with the other games being shared between Kogarah, Scum Park and Win Stadium.
- The football club would be run entirely out of Saints Leagues, any ex Illawarra and Cronulla employees and playing staff to be sacked to avoid 'us and them' menalities forming and disrupting harmony within the new club. A serious attempt to create a professional staff roster based out of the St.George football offices with a traditional and classy marketing campaign reflecting the great tradition of St.George.
- An amnesty on old Illawarra and Cronulla jersies as to allow
people to forget that the two previous clubs ever existed. We don't want the new brand to reek of a concotion of three clubs merged together.
- All evidence of the existence of Cronulla and Illawarra to be
destroyed. Neither club won a premiership so who cares. The club's records will reflect the acheivements of St.George 1921-1998, St.George Illawarra 1999-2001 and St.George 2002-
- Kogarah Oval to be recognised as the club's spiritual home and all training sessions to take place at the fabled old ground.
- A dissolution of St.George Illawarra RLFC Pty Ltd. The new club
will be administered by St.George DRLFC Ltd. Former Cronulla or
Illawarra board members, players, employees or season ticket holders will be forbidden from representation on the St.George board.
This is a fair merger agreement when you consider that St.George
have 10 times as many supporters as both Illawarra and Cronulla combined, St.George are the only club out of the three partners that would have any hope of making it as a single entity, St.George have a long and glorious history while the other two clubs have zero premierships to show for 51 combined seasons in the competition. Also, no one would really care if the other two clubs lived or died so put on a red vee jumper or &&^% off, you're lucky we agreed to play two games a year at your respective %$#^ hole grounds.
