St. Helens will defeat Brisbane by how many points?

The smart money in England is giving Brisbane 11 points start against St. Helens. The feeling is that the replacement of Jamie Lyon by Matt Gidley will cost St Helens 10-15 points, and therefore prevent the 25 point hammering of Brisbane that Sean Long had bet on and Keiron Cunningham was hoping for. St Helens want to repeat their victory over the Broncos of February 2001, when Paul Newlove stepped inside Sailor and raced downfield to set up the winning try by Chris Joynt. They also want to avenge the humiliating loss they suffered at the hands of Brad Fittler's Roosters in February 2004.

I met Newlove and Joynt at a party in Leeds after the Kiwis' Tri Nations 24-0 victory over Australia in November 2005. They had a good laugh about the Broncos, described Wendell Sailor as a "big sheila," and wished they were still playing so that they could do it all to Brisbane again.

Do people agree that Gidley is a 10-15 point worse player than Lyon?

I'd rank Gidley as being about equal with Lyon personally. He doesn't set the world on fire, and though Lyon was killing it during 06, he was woeful in his performance for the Roos. Could've just been a one-off.

Sure, it will take time for Gidley to adjust to the different style of play of the ESL and to gel with a new team, so I guess that points difference is warranted. Not because Lyon is far superior, but just due to the fact that he knew the game of those around him and Gidley will be new to the scene.

Unfortunately for me, I can see the Broncos losing this one by 12-16. I'd love for us to win it, and I really hope our boys see this game as one with a real purpose. The more enthusiasm we show, the better our chances - but I think the Saints will be more determined.

The WCC is always a great money spinner for me though. The TAB always has the ESL side as rank $4 outsiders!

What a pity that Australia's top rugby league club is rarely able to defeat Great Britain's top rugby league club.

On the other hand it shows how ignorant that arrogant Clovelly resident Phil Gould really is, when he bad mouths English rugby league all the time.

just because your team will never make one, let alone win one...

LOL. What do Souths have do with the price of fish? Deadset some people. The WCC is played in the offseason, in Great Britain, in winter. If that's a true indication of each team's talents then I'll eat my hat.

For Brisbane, this match will be a pre-season trial game, played in a foreign country. While for St Helens they'll be playing this match having finished their pre-season and already started their Super League season.

Given those facts it's very hard to see anything but a St Helens win.

However, it's good to see that Brisbane are going to do some preparations for the game by playing a match against the Celtic Crusaders in Wales before the WCC. It shows they're taking the game seriously and it will give great support to rugby league in Wales.

Actually it proves Phil Gould 100% spot on. Considering he was the Roosters' coaching director in 2003 when you lot copped an almighty hammering. Considering the fact the Roosters were really the only Aussie team in the WCC's history to take it seriously, i do believe 38-0 is a true reflection of the talent between the two comps.

Lets see if the Broncos can be the first club since the Roosters to finally put a good win over the rivals.

now that you have mentioned it merkin. i am prepared to throw money behind my team to smash your pathetic useless pommy team by 13+. Justin Hodges to be the first try scorer and brisbane will win both halves.

and since nearly half your team played for gb in the tri nations, it looks like your team have no hope.

If Brisbane take this game seriously, then they do stand a chance. We showed that if taken seriously, and prepared for accordingly, than there is an appalling gap between both leagues.

All it takes is for NRL teams to step up and take it seriously.

Why take it seriously?, i personally hate the broncos but i wouldnt blame them whatsoever for fielding a B grade team to get their good players through. Its nothing more than an exhibition match for Aussie teams. If the Cowboys win a premiership any time soon id be praying that none of our big name players were involved in the WCC, id be much happier to send the Young Guns over for a holiday and a run around.

I love how the Pommy teams see a WCC as a chance to gloat about how good they are, let the baby have his bottle i say. If you want a better indication of how far ahead the NRL is than the ESL, reschedule the WCC to the very end of the NRL season, or sometime when both comps overlap.

The game gets plenty of worldwide media coverage and is also a very profitable exercise for the ARL/RFL and both clubs involved. No it isn't at an ideal time (for either club!!) but our attitude to it over the years is embarrasing to say the least. Ideally it would be a week or two after each comps GF but then do you want to sacrifice the international calendar for it (not that we take very seriously either!)
