Really? You're willing to base your opinion on three or four below-par performances, and ignore the 15-16 odd good ones?

I would have been a big confidence killer, Timmah. Hopefully not for their sake, but the old grumpmeister has a big job on his hands if they want some silverware next Labour Day.

If you look at it the other way atleast 1 team in the final 4 missed out on the top 8 the year before.

The teams in bold did not make the top 8 the year before.

2003 - Penrith (12th), Roosters, Warriors, Bulldogs (15th due to cap breachs).
2004 - Bulldogs, Roosters, Penrith, Cowboys (11th)
2005 - Tigers (9th), Parra (12th), Dragons, Cowboys.
2006 - Broncos, Storm, Bulldogs (12th), Dragons
2007 - Storm, Manly, Cowboys (9th), Parra
2008 - Manly, Storm, Sharks (11th), Warriors
2009 - Storm, Eels (11th), Bulldogs (16th), Broncos

Good work mongoose.

10 highlighted clubs, 6 of which were 11th or 12th, the other two were either 9th or last.

So it's a 60% chance that either Penrith or North Queensland will make the prelim final, and a 40% chance that either Wests or the Roosters will too.

HAVING ANOTHER LOOK at how those clubs who rose to the top 4 fared the following season (in red) in comparison:

2003 - Penrith (12th) (4th), Roosters, Warriors, Bulldogs (15th due to cap breachs) (1st).
2004 - Bulldogs, Roosters, Penrith, Cowboys (11th) (2nd)
2005 - Tigers (9th) (11th), Parra (12th) (8th), Dragons, Cowboys.
2006 - Broncos, Storm, Bulldogs (12th) (6th), Dragons
2007 - Storm, Manly, Cowboys (9th) (15th), Parra
2008 - Manly, Storm, Sharks (11th) (15th), Warriors
2009 - Storm, Eels (11th), Bulldogs (16th), Broncos

On only 3 occasions out of 8 did the top 4 newcomer miss the finals the following year

Really? How many times did Brisbane have mid-to-end of season slumps and manage to guide them to the semis the next year?

As Pennywise said - 1992-2009 and there's still doubters

Thing is, one of the top 4 regular season will colapse next year, its just really hard to predict who it will be. Also there is always one flyer that comes from nowhere. I think this could be Canberra or New Zealand.

Here's an interesting stat. Since 2002 at least one of the final four remaining preliminary final clubs have either produced numbing results the following seasons or absolutely collapsed in a heap.

Below is a list of the four finalists since 2002. In (brackets) are the finishing positions the following season of those particular clubs that missed out on the top eight in that following season. As you can see, some of these clubs are missing out the next season by a long way.

2002 - Roosters, Warriors, Broncos, Sharks (12th).
2003 - Penrith, Roosters, Warriors (14th), Bulldogs.
2004 - Bulldogs (12th), Roosters (9th), Penrith (10th), Cowboys.
2005 - Tigers (11th), Parra, Dragons, Cowboys (9th).
2006 - Broncos, Storm, Bulldogs, Dragons (13th).
2007 - Storm, Manly, Cowboys (15th), Parra (11th).
2008 - Manly, Storm, Sharks (15th), Warriors (14th).

So when one reflects on this 2009 season, the four preliminary finalists were Melbourne, Parramatta, Canterbury, and Brisbane, which of these teams are going to once again, surprisingly fall a little flat, not aim up or not live up to their hype in season 2010?

Just like to point out that the Warriors finished 6th in round robins in 2003 and finished 3rd overall coming short in the prelim finals against the champions of that year penrith panthers
