Steinlager

what you are sayining is probably right, back in the good ol, bad ol days, Steinies were the best thing on the shelf.

Out of a lot of drinkers price range. Sort of an elite brew.

True..I remember when I started drinking that Steinies were the elite beer and untouchable...

Its in my top 3 worst beers ever, along with Crown Pilsener and Barefoot Radler. It boggles my mind how it's so popular, but each to their own.

LMFAO I got that Barefoot a while ago. Thankfully I only bought 2 just to try. I literally finished the neck of one & poured the rest out. That, beyond a shadow of a doubt, was made by some bastard on a bet that he could sell horsepiss if it was in a pretty enough bottle. The fact it is still available is a blight on society IMO...

Monteiths is an excellent beer, i was drinking them when i was over there in the pubs around Queenstown. Also drank the Speights over there, they are easy to drink, kind of like Carlton Draught, nothing special but not woeful.

Lion Red was disgusting the time i had that.

And yes before it's mentioned I know SOME Aussie's drink Fosters but for the most part we don't.

:D

Does anyone remember Fosters Extra..Made in the 80s and early 90s..??

It was 5.8% and that was nice..Most probably because of the alcohol content it had a real 'depth' to the taste..By that I mean, try a lite beer and 'feel' the difference when you take a sip of a full strength..

Anyway, that was a Fosters that was a good 'un... :D

I wouldn't say it's all that popular, I don't know anyone who drinks it. tbh I think your average Joe Bloggs drinks the cheap local 4% ales like Speights, Waikato Draight, Lion Red, DB Draught etc, then you've got local beers like Monteiths and Macs, and then you've got the international lager staples like Becks, Heineken and Stella. Steinlager is in the latter category but I honestly don't know anyone who drinks it instead of those mentioned.

Having said that, it's certainly not perceived as a cheap beer, it's in a similar price bracket to Heineken or Becks, maybe a dollar or two cheaper. And they recently released a new version called "Steinlager Pure" which I have had a few times and am quite partial to actually.

Another related question- I regularly drink Becks or Heineken, and last night I bought a dozen Stellas home for the boys (they were on special at the supermarket) and they ridiculed me and claimed it was common knowledge that Stella was awful and I may as well have bought 20 Double Browns for $20 as they wouldn't taste any worse. Anyone else agree that Stella is awful and of a lower calibre than Heineken or Becks?

You dont know anyone that drinks steinies lol steinlager is a drink that most avoid cause it hits you hard the next day but its damn good drop. If you can drink heinies then you can sure as hell handle a steinie. It isnt cheap either most peeps like to drink speights tuis a exports tend to look at them as bloody weak as drinkers lol.

It's bad but no worse than VB/Draught/New and so forth, and certainly better than crap like Tooheys Red. It's just a good ten bucks a case cheaper, is a Coles Group home brand made by Boags to compete with crap beers at a low price.

On the plus side though, the home brand policy means that the stuff we import, like Konig Pilsener and Furstenburg, is nice and cheap. About 35-40 a case for stuff that's easily superior to piss like Becks and Stella.

Pretty sure Lion Red and Speights are the same beer lol.

Actually heard a bit of an urban legend to that effect once from someone who worked there.

Maybe it's all in the marketing? Or maybe its cos i had speights in bottle form and lion red off tap (and it was very flat off tap).

There's a similar rumour about VB and Crown Lager - Crownies are basically VB in an expensive bottle.

As for the bad beer list, the obvious ones are VB and New, Carlton Cold is absolutely aweful. VB gold is piss as well.

For xmas i got a book that called 'Elephants on Acid" and it was a collection of summaries of weird experiments. One of them was about wine tasting and how they got wine experts to describe a white wine and a red wine. The only difference between the wines was red food colouring but not one of the experts picked it. They also described experiments where the same wine was served in different bottles. The wine in the expensive bottle always rated higher than the wine in the cheap bottle. I'm sure all of this applies to beer as well.

Having said that the only time i've drunk Steinlager was when i was in Tonga and I don't know anyone who drinks it.I usually buy whatever is on sale out of heinekin, stella, monteith's pilsner and sol
