Well the boys have got into the squad well done'

NSW Origin squad named

10 May 2004

Newcastle halfback Kurt Gidley, Dragons utility Ben Hornby and Roosters centre Ryan Cross were surprise selections in an expanded NSW State of Origin rugby league squad named today.

The selectors had been expected to name a 25-man squad but instead chose 30 players ahead of the three-match series against Queensland which starts in Sydney on May 26.

Gidley, who has taken over the Knights' No.7 shirt following the season-ending injury to Australian captain Andrew Johns, is one of three halfbacks named along with favoured contenders Craig Gower and Brett Kimmorley.

While Gidley came off the bench in Friday's City v Country match, Hornby, who has been playing fullback for the Dragons, did not even take part in that representative match.

Cross was a late call up to the City team for the injured Mark Gasnier.

A powerful performance for Country helped St George-Illawarra forward Brent Kite to nab a spot in the squad.

NSW squad:- Trent Barrett (Dragons), Willie Mason (Bulldogs), Danny Buderus (Knights), Anthony Minichiello (Roosters), Joel Clinton (Panthers), Ryan O'Hara (Raiders), Matt Cooper (Dragons), Mark O'Meley (Bulldogs), Ryan Cross (Roosters), Andrew Ryan (Bulldogs), Michael De Vere (Broncos), Jason Ryles (Dragons), Craig Fitzgibbon (Roosters), Jason Stevens (Sharks), Mark Gasnier (Dragons), Timana Tahu (Knights), Kurt Gidley (Knights), Lance Thompson (Dragons), Matthew Gidley (Knights), Shaun Timmins (Dragons), Craig Gower (Panthers), Trent Waterhouse (Panthers), Scott Hill (Storm), Craig Wing (Roosters), Nathan Hindmarsh (Eels), Ben Hornby (Dragons), Ben Kennedy (Knights), Brett Kimmorley (Sharks), Brent Kite (Dragons), Luke Lewis (Panthers).

Players not considered through injury:
Daniel Abraham (Knights), Luke Bailey (Dragons), Nathan Blacklock (Dragons), Andrew Johns (Knights), Matt King (Storm), Steve Simpson (Knights).

Good news for the boys, but ultimately a watse of time. Noddy is about as much of a chance as Dimitri is of passing an entrance exam to kindergarten.

Stevo could well be in woth a shot though, now that Bailey is out.

If Noddy has a blinder against the Roosters they won't be able to ignore him.

What about Bails???

Oh, I forgot...Gus Gould labelled him as a bloke who was 'made for Origin' last year. That'd be the kiss of death right there, for my money!

Well done to the boys but with 30 players in the squad the majority of city and country players have made it anyway. I dont know why they even bothered annoucing a preliminary squad if it was going to be so large.
What counts is the final selection.
Stevens is definately in with a shot IMO. He has been playing great this season and NSW could do with a bit of experience up front.
Kimmorley has given himself the best possible chance of being selected but i dont think Gould will swallow his pride and select him in front of the incumbent test half. A mighty push from selectors would need to happen for Kimmorley to get selected.

It is astronishing to me they say that Gower is the incumbent Test half and therfore should have the favored running.

SO WAS NODDY IN AN INFERIOR SIDE THAT BEAT ENGLAND!!!!!! AND HE WAS MAN OF THE SERIES!! FFFFFFAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGG!

Anyway well done men and well deserved.

kimmorley wont get it
stevens should

I dont like gower at all but he deserves a go ahead of Kimmorley. If NSW has a shocker, i guess they will reassess then but i wouldnt hold my breath.

Stevens has been the main reason for our form reversal and deserves his origin jumper back.

and who can argue with noddys form ? wins V the roosters and eagles for us would see him picked I think.

Forget Bailey, Gould only pushed for him last season because he was trying to swing Bailey to the roosters , but now he is staying a shark, gus has blacklisted him.

CHarming bugger,.

Jase won us the match for sure Bluey.

His hit ups in the first 20 mins made the game for us, without him, ably assisted by NUts, we would have been down by 18 I reckon early.

I'm torn. It's great for the boys that they got named, but I'd much rather see them go round for us.

I have similar sentiments Genius. However, I would love to see Stevo get a run so STEVO'S DISCIPLES (the group formally known as Bailey's Boys) can get a run also.

Couldnt care less for Stevo and Noddy to be playing Origin. I like the blokes but from my perspective I'd prefer to see them injury and risk free and not chasing glory for Phil Gould.

If he wants to denigrate a player publicly like he did with BK he should do it without him.
